Unfortunately it probably will get redesigned to have a plastic back if the rumors of a lowered price are true. I really hope that doesn't happen though. Stainless steel (or whatever metal it is) is a lot better than crappy plastic.

why, oh why can't we get a speaker? Keep your plastic back. Keep your extra memory. Keep your GPS. Keep your camera (though that would be great), just give me a speaker!

was thinking could apple add the old iphone backing to the new touch? at least make the touch look a bit nicer?

that along with physical buttons. Some want to control the volume from their pocket and change tracks...

What about GPS, volume buttons, external speakers, and a camera all rolled into one device?

This is Apple, after all. And people (like me) are willing to pay for such a device. There is no way I will buy an iPhone under someone other than Verizon. But I do want the iPhone features, out of contract.

GPS maps were always preloaded, until recently. A camera isn't hard to install (and it's cheap, I hear). External speakers would be very nice, especially for games. And volume buttons would be very nice.

People continue to forget that the iPhone and Touch are two completely separate markets that have basically no competition with each other. One is a phone, and the other isn't. For product distinction, the other features couldn't matter less. Nothing the iPhone has or practically might get would convince me to buy one at this time. And I'm certain most Touch owners feel the same way.

Dude the stainless steel looks/feels awesome. I guess is all personal pref. Anyway, I'll be the jerk who says that you should have invested in a cheap case so it wasn't "scratched to ****."

You may very well get GPS. The front page links to a site where someone claims he heard from a worker at the chinese manufacturer that there was GPS in the new Touches. If you look at the computer rendering/scan they had to do to make cases for the new Touch, there are a couple of interesting additions to the upper bezel. One might be a camera lens for video chat between devices, or possibly a microphone.

We all know you need a data connection to use GPS. I pay $20 a month for unlimited data for the Garman I have in my car. Its just how it is. ATT says so.
Others have already mentioned how odd this is. But I'll say that in Japan you don't need any kind of data connection. If you want to update your travel map in an average Tokyo car, you can *gasp* buy a new CD-ROM and shove it in your dashboard. The Global Positioning will work with nothing but the car battery power, which is how it should be.

I think they're going to add volume buttons this time. I can't not believe that isn't something all iPod touch users wish it had!

Also, what do you guys think about a leather backing (like the Blackberry Bold)? It won't scratch like the chrome, it won't be slippery like the iPhone aluminum backing is, and it won't crack like the 3G iPhone does. I'm not asking for premium leather..just something that is affordable and feels nice!

Unfortunately, the environmentalists would be jumping at Apple for this the first chance they got. Too bad, too, as a leather back would actually be very nice.

Ah yes, how can I forget about those people! In that case, there's always alternatives to leather. Have anyone heard of "PureSoft?" It feels like premium leather, but is not actually leather and is "eco-friendly." They usually use it in chairs though..lol
