iPod touch ipod touch replacement. 2gen to 3gen?

my ipod touch has been acting up, and it's not under apple's warranty anymore.
however, i have a 4 year extended plan through target, and apple gave me a note saying that it's defective and to issue me a replacement.
will target give me a 3rd generation in replacement of my 2nd?
it doesn't really matter to me either way, i'm not trying to cheat the system, i'm just curious. do they even carry 2nd gen ipod touch anymore?

Well, i don't know about now, but when my first gen's headphone jack messed up, it was replaced with another first gen from behind the counter. This was a while after the second gen had been out too. Hope this helps!

No they do not carry the 2G iPod touch anymore. But they specifically stock refurbished iPods for warranty replacements.

In December, my 2nd gen ipod got replace by a 2nd gen ipod.
