iPod touch iPod touch revived after months

After having been dead for months my iTouch has woken from its slumber; long story. It says i need to update it, but i honestly don't think I have ever updated it before, so my question is would updating my 2nd generation iTouch to ios 4.2 be free? This is probably very dumb, but I'm poor and i need to know, thanks😀
