Hey all,

I am trying to update / restore my brothers iPod touch. It is a 2nd/3rd generation 8GB.

When I try to update it on his laptop (Windows 7) I get the following error: "Unknown Error 3014" and "The iPod cannot be restored at this time because the iPod software update server could not be contacted or is temporally unavailable."

When I connect it to my Mac I get the following message:

"The iPod cannot be restored at this time because the iPod software update server could not be contacted or is temporally unavailable."

This is starting to drive me insane. This is not a jail-broken iPod Touch. I've tried deleting the extra bit in the "hosts" file in Windows (there wasn't anything to delete).

I've manually downloaded a iOS 4.1 restore file and tried to update to that to only receive the same error message.

My internet connection is fine - I can connect to the iTunes music store etc etc, and recently did a restore on my brothers iPod (similar model) and it worked the other day.

I also made a new user account on my Mac and tried to update on that and got the same error message.

Why isn't this working?

I've already done that. iTunes seems to find that it's in recovery mode (the iPod also shows the "connect to iTunes screen", and I click restore and I get the same error message.

Mac:

1. Power off the device (Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPod touch to turn off.
2. Press and hold the Home button while reconnecting the USB cable to iPod. When you reconnect the USB to iPod, the device should then power on.
3. Continue holding the Home button while iPod starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo.
4. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message:
5. Restore and it'll download ~240mb firmware and you're done

WARNING! This will erase all data on your iPod.

Windows:

1. Plug in your iPod.
2. Wait for it to load completely.
3. Open My Computer (or computer if on Vista). Make sure you can view hidden files.
4. Go to iPod_control.
5. Go to the folder named Device.
6. If your iPod is locked, there will be a file _locked . Rename the file to _unlocked.
7. Safely remove your iPod and it will be cleared.

I found this in the forums. Not sure if it pertains to your specific questions, but it's worth a try.

Is there a difference between DFU and Recovery mode? It seems to always be going into recovery.
It won't work when I try to restore it.

BTW the iPod seems to be working fine with the apps / music on it just now, so I believe the iPod itself is OK just some faulty software somewhere.

The Main difference between the Recovery mode and DFU mode is iBoot. Recovery mode uses iBoot during restoring or upgrading your iPhone while DFU mode bypasses the iBoot so you can downgrade the current firmware because there is no iBoot agent during the DFU mode. About iBoot, iBoot is the bootloader on iPhone OS devices. iBoot acts on restore while iPhone is in Recovery Mode, iBoot makes sure that you are flashing a firmware version greater than or equal to a current one. If you are not, iBoot will not allow the restore to proceed. Because of this, firmware downgrading must be done in DFU mode. This means if you need to restore your iPhone to current version simply put the iPhone in recovery mode and iTunes takes care of the rest but if you need to downgrade your current firmware to lower one you need to put your iPhone in DFU mode. For example you can’t downgrade Firmware 3.0 to Firmware 2.2.1 without entering in to DFU Mode.
Did a Google.

I posted that about someone who accidentally locked their iPod.

OK I've done that and I get the black screen and everything and I manually click on a restore file or I click to update and I get this:

The update server is down.

I called a Apple Tech CSR. I was trying to update my iPhone 4 so we're out of luck til it's back up.

You're kidding...

I've been trying to get this to work for like 3 hours!

Grr!

I'm glad now at least I know what the problem is!

Thank you!

Are you getting the same error message?
