Right, something similar happened to me. Connect your ipod, then hold the home button and the power button untill the ipod turns off, it will start up again, let go of the power button but keep holding the home button. A message should pop up in itunes.

this is what i did as well.

when things wont restore!

When your restore of iphone ipad ipod hangs or gets 1604 errors close itunes unplug device restart computer plug in device go to user library itunes whatever device update file delete the most recent update empty trash redownload restore file restore if device was jailbroken or restore hangs run blackra1n while device is plugged in and itunes open it will continue the process of restore. Device will work again trust me.

ipod touch restore

thanks, but it still won't work:(

I have jail broken several ipod touches and my success rate dropped dramatically. my iphone stalled i restored to factory and it failed i took it to my back up computer and it failed i plugged into my newest computer and it zipped through the process. This made me curious I have been looking through my computer and found restore logs the itunes keep and i think it may be the problem. Long answer but use a different computer. If you dont have another you can try removing then re installing.

good luck

I tried tons of suggestions that I found on various websites and the one that worked in the end, using an apple usb cord instead of a different brand. so simple but it ended the problem of having to restore my ipod touch but not being able to.

It worked for me...

This sounds ridiculous but I have had another six months out of mine by doing the following:

Hold your itouch firmly, place the socket end to your mouth and blow steadily and firmly.

Plug in to the computer and ...

Try it.

Windows and Mac

I don't know if it has any difference between mac and PC but my iPod Touch 2nd Gen wouldn't restore on my mac. I also have a PC. Well after monkey fudgin with the mac for a while I went to the PC it and authorized the computer, then restored fine.

Now I just got my mac computer. I don't know if it has anything to do with me originally doing all my activating/syncs on my PC then when I try to restore it on my current computer that i just got a month ago it won't do it. So maybe that's it.

Anyways long story short if your device won't restore try a different computer, if it still doesn't restore. Try a different computer with a different operating system, ie... Mac or PC.

I actually found that restoring and updating with a Mac is always better and faster. However, with sticky situations, such as jailbreaking or restoring to custom firmware, I always use my PC laptop...

Answer to problem

Hi this unfortunately happened to me yesterday. I was loading new CD's onto itunes when a message box popped up to say 'New version of itunes is available do you want to install now' so of course I clicked Yes. However horrors my ipod then completely froze causing error message, was told to click Restore by iTunes but this would not work, ipod was locked with cd disc music note symbol and usb symbol. When disconnected ipod was blank. I searched Google for solutions and most said to press and hold the home and power buttons together and iTunes would restore. However this did not work for me, tried 5 times but still kept getting error messages.

In desperation the next day I telephoned Apple Helpline and spent 45 minutes talking to the guy on the phone. It turned out that my problem was that I was on a computer using Microsoft XP and although it seemed to accept 10.4 update ok, something must have been missing as it could not restore the ipod. The only way we could sort it was by me going on an up-to-date laptop which used Windows 7, I then downloaded iTunes to this laptop and then connected 'dead' ipod. The iTunes on this laptop recognised that the ipod needed restoring and proceeded to update it properly and restore was completed without any further problems.

Unfortunately it was back to factory settings with no previous music downloaded but the guy was very helpful and said if I emailed apple.com/uk/support/itunes there would be a form I could fill in to tell them I had lost previous items and they would check my account and resend anything I had previously purchased for free.

Hope this helps some of you and avoids you having a sleepless night like I had :)

i wish that is what happen to me but it isnt. you see i plugged my ipod into a different computer than the one i had all of my info on and now it says what a new ipod says "plug into itunes", and of course the computer i had all of the info on stopped working so "the geek squad" had to completely strip the computer of all it memory and now its up in running but you know it doesnt have any of its former memory so its like a brand new laptop. But anyways, thats not my point, my point is that itunes has been saying that i have to restore the ipod in order to use it on itunes but of course every time i try it keeps on saying it cant because of some error. But it does go all the way through the update of whatever but right when its done it says it cant because of the error. PLEASE help me i have no idea what im doing. :(

Can't Restore iPod Touch 2g - Never Jailbroken

My son was messing around with his iPod and changed the passcode which he has now forgotten. I figured a simple restore would fix, but, I keep getting an error (3194).

I've tried just about everything...
Tiny Umbrella
redsn0w
iReb, ect.

NOTHING is working!

Device has never been jailbroken so no SHSHs are on file anywhere... if i were to try a downgrade.

ANYONE EVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM?

New not backup

Thanks... I spent hours on a dozen or so restore attempts with no success, but when I restarted my computer and itunes I was able to restore as "New" (restoring from a backup always failed).
