Sounds like between this and the various threads on the Apple discussions site, there is some inconsistancy with the battery ratings and the actual playtimes.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was a firmware issue.

My indicator is messed up to. The battery lasts along time but it goes down to 50% with in an hour or so. If I watch 20min video it goes right to empty but still plays music for several hours.

The battery is good but I want to get a battery back for long plane trips.

Initial charge

Just wondering, could it be a problem not charging the iPod for three hours when first using the unit? I'm pretty sure I did so but the mac may have gone to sleep and cut the power feed to the iPod itself.

hi, everyone my first post here:)

I was also worried about the battery meter so I did a full charge on my new 60G video iPod then I played Sin City (2hr 3min) and Snatch (1hr 42min) and another 15 minutes of FF:AC and then the battery was completely drained.

I played the video with back light on and wide screen off (force full screen).

I checked Apple's website, they said that the battery meter was not accurate, and it can look not full even when it is full... That sucks.

Anyway, their explanation of battery charge circles is not clear to me. I mean, how to count how many full circles it had when I always hook it up to my computer at home and office?

Well I've been getting about 12-13 hours of battery life playing music, any video cuts into that dramatically. So far it has usually been in the "red" for about 6 of those hours.
This is of course without the back light, which is really unfortunate since on the previous iPods it was kinda indulgent to have the back light on, but now you can't fully appreciate the amazing screen on the new iPod has with out the back light, and doesn't have as much contrast for backlight-less control.
