I have a friend who got an ipod for a gift. he doesnt have a mac so one of his other friends used his mac to upload some songs on it.

now he has a new windows laptop and he wants that to upload music to his ipod, but doesnt want to lose the songs currently loaded on the ipod.

Does he need to manually use a mac to get the songs he wants to keep then reset his ipod? or can he just drop it into itunes windows?

One easy way to do it is like this:

Go to mediafour.com and download the trial addition. This will allow the PC laptop to read the mac formatted ipod drive.

Or:

Since all the music he has is on the mac, go ahead and have him plug it into the windows box. This will erase and format the hardrive on the ipod for use with windows. After its all done, have him go back to his friends house and hook to the mac. When itunes pops up it will ask to update the software. Click cancel and the ipod will mount. Transfer all the songs on the mac to the ipod again. Then, once all is good, he will need to download one of many programs that can take the songs off the ipod and onto the new pc laptop. Go to www.ipodlounge.com for one of these.

The first option is probably the easiest so do that first.
