I want to install linux on an ipod and use it to boot my computer. I want this on a seprate partition becuase the linux wont boot of a mac os extened partition.

Is their any way i can have the ipod use 20gb of space for my music and 10gb of space for my linux install?

any help is greatly apreciated.

apple doesn't want you to partition it but it says that music will only play on a FAT32 disk. so there's no reason why it wouldn't work if you kept the partition as FAT32. my experience is limited so i do not know if you can actually do this, but i would do a little more research. and if your iPod just stops working, take it to apple and get a replacement. if you're convincing enough, you can get it free of charge. but the website says not to format using HFS or NTFS, so why not format using FAT32?

well i tried that and i got some really weird results.
My mac thought it had two ipods connected to it. And filled up both ipods with music. I deleted the music from the smaller partition and copied a live boot cd to it. I restarted and it brought me back into osx (forgot to select usb startup in bios) deleted my linux files and refilled my ipod. Now when i try to startup my ipod i get that folder symbol. I restored my ipod and im done with it. I'm just going to buy a 1 gig thumb drive. Thanks for your help though.

k guys sorry for the wait.
I tried this many times and have tried formating snd erasing volumes useing combinations of pdisk and disk utility. I can safely make the main drive (music containing) smaller by folloing the steps. But when i try format the new space you run into problems:mad: .

in the instructions it tells you to erase the volume that will contain music and that doesent mess with the ipod firmware, but if you erase your new partition it will screwup the ipod and possibly brick it.

bytheway this is a video ipod.
