i just got this ipod and plugged it into my computer. i don't know what style...but it's an older model.
 the screen on it is now frozen, and shows a lightening bolt through the battery....does this mean I killed it. I've tried pushing all of the buttons, but nothing happens.

A lightning bolt through the battery means it's charging.

You say it's an older iPod but you don't know what kind. Does it look kind of like an iPhone (3.5" touchscreen) or does it have a wheel on the front? Or maybe you know it's an iPod touch but don't know which version?

Sometimes iPods (not iPod Touch) do freeze up when connected to the computer, if that happens, Reset your iPod(link does not apply to the iPod Touch).

If it shows in iTunes, make sure you eject it from there before disconnecting it and going through the reset procedure.
