DeadHead, to be honest, you're right. I'm not a pro audio person, but an audio/mic in is exactly what i want. A voice recorder that has 20 gigs of storage for my week of class lectures. And I want them digital so I can transfer them to CD easily. I'm not looking for ultra quality, just lots of storage and something that can double as my "walkman". And audio/mic in for the iPod is my deal maker.

that was a harsh rant though... i think most people want an audio in just to do small dictations and the like... maybe tape a class at college, not make pro audio recordings of washed out hippie bands... i dont think the ipod will ever turn into a portable DAT deck or a MIDI device like i saw on another thread, or was it this one, there are so many ipod threads i dont know which is which... but in the end they are all the same and ill probably never get an ipod...

Whatever. They may be a musician wanting to record ad-hoc sampling material when on the move though. Is that any less a just cause?

Thats still useful. I don't know any audio recorders that could (for example) record several weeks of a students lectures without needing dumping. I would have loved that when I was a student.

The ONLY way to get DECENT portable recording is to drop $ 2200.00 on a Tascam DA-P1 portable DAT deck.
Thats rubbish. You can get decent DAT recorders for less. You could use an ibook and high quality MOTU audio interface for the same...

I have used these to record over 300 Grateful Dead , 48 Bruce Hornsby, 35 Dave Matthews band, and 3 snake oil medicine show, concerts live.
Sorry, but as arguments go, that means you record lots and spend lots of money on hardware. It doesnt mean that you are skilled, knowledgeable or even correct... (I'm not saying you're not, just that your point is irrelevent)

Now you have children going to concerts with less than $500 worth of gear, makeing the absolute WORST sounding recordings known to man.
People listen to recordings of music for emotional quality not sound quality. For most kids thats the most important thing. When you were younger, given no budget I think youd settle for a rough and ready recording instead of nothing.

To top it all off these are the kids that illeagly sell these tapes in the parking lot at shows, (when I see this happining I stand in front of them and offer their customers much better sounding, FREE copyies of concerts).
A rubbish recording isnt likely to detract from a bands sales. A good one is. Both actions are illeagal, which is likely to cause the band most harm though?

Untill you have(for the love of the music) driven accross the country 12 times, slept in tents camped out on asphalt parking lots....
If you are doing it just for the music why rant about something that doesnt impact your recordings? Why shout about what you're doing? Why put down things other younger, less well funded people are doing for the same reasons? Everyone has to start somewhere, and as for selling bootlegs, both poorly equipped and well equipped people do it. Your horse is way too high...

But if they were to put two xlr jacks on the side of the thing, I would buy one.
XLR connectors are used for connecting balanced line. Balanced line is used to reduce the effects of interference on audio signals over long runs not short distances. An XLR connector on the side would offer no improvement in sound quality. It would not mean the internal A->D's sound any better. It would not mean you would get fewer artifacts from recording compressed audio. Thats a really strange thing to say in the light of your previous comments.
