ipsw downloads trustworthy?

    Hi:

Just wondering--to use redsn0w we need to download a special .ipsw (not from Apple). These seem to be available on different sites. Why doesn't the dev team make the special firmware available, given we can't necessarily trust an ipsw downloaded from some other site?

    Thanks

ok understood. But I upgraded the firmware but it didn't really complete because it said it couldn't activate it. I don't seem to have a 3.0 .ipsw on my computer as threads say I should. I'd like to use the actual Apple one to modify--can I just download that from Apple without doing the upgrade process in iTunes?

I downloaded that link but when I run redsn0w I get "unable to recognize specified ipsw". I tried downloading it twice but no joy. Is the only reason for that error a corrupted ipsw? Wouldn't expect that getting it right from the apple site...

If you upgraded to 3.0 via iTunes, that ispw is already stored on your own computer (downloaded directly from Apple).

Just drop it on a USB drive, get redsnow and away you go.

    On a MAC, it's under User/Library/iTunes/Software I believe.

The ipsw wasn't stored on my computer after the upgrade in iTunes.

However, I did find out Firefox didn't download correctly--the ipsw was only 60 MB or so. Downloaded with IE and got the full 230MB file, and JBed successfully.

It is, whether Mac or PC the ipsw is downloaded during an upgrade before it is installed, so it is there!
