I don't have a wireless modem/router at home. There are like almost zero free hotspots at the place where I live, lucky me :)

I do have a laptop which supports 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN.
I am able to create a wireless network (if i create one, will I also be able to easily delete it?).

If I do that, will I be able to use wi-fi on my iPod touch by connecting to that wireless network, created on the laptop?

I already own my iPod touch for 3 weeks, but still haven't been able to test
the safari and youtube out.

I'm a noob when it comes to all that wi-fi stuff..
I couldn't find an answer to my question on the net.. so
will anyone please help me figure this out?

Thank you! :D

I'd like some info on this too please! Same situation: laptop (with wlan card) connected via UTP to the internet. I'm running vista 32 bits however...

ChiChi, how do you create a wireless network using your laptop?

Thank you Denniz! will look at that!

@ Cache: In Control panel I am able to setup a wireless network (wizard). I'm not running vista though. Window XP.

Thanks, I think I got one set up now and my touch can see the network (and connect to it). Unfortunately Safari doesn't work yet, I think I'll have to configure the network a bit better. :p

I'll let you know how it goes.

Btw, I can just delete the network again if I want to. Also it's WEP encrypted (can also choose WPA2), so when it works I guess you could just leave it on all the time without worrying other people using it. :)

god your far ahead of me lol. Thanks for clearing certain things up. Does it work yet? Or it still fails to work (safari)?

I can choose two options:
using a USB flash drive or set up a network manually

is a usb flash drive of 128mb enough? or do I like need to buy some special usb flash drive....?

Hm... I coudn't get it to work, because there wasn't much stuff in the settings that I could change, so I searched a bit more with google to find this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=GI-s5x4lLLw

Because you're running XP:
"How to turn your laptop into a wireless hotspot. Works well with Vista and Mac OSX but be careful with XP."

Anyway, at around 2:30 he explains it for XP.

I still can't get the "Internet Connection Sharing" (ICS) to work, but I think it's because of how I'm set up in my UTP-cabled-network. I'll have to do some more research.

Edit: Sweet! Got it to work! Just had to turn off my firewall (doh!). :D

youtube works! :D

I was totally heading the wrong way lol. Thanks for the youtube vid! it helped me alot!

I just can't get safari to work yet. It says it can't find the server. firewall needs to be turned off on laptop?

Edit: works now! thank u! :D God, finally after 3 weeks lol XD

Np! Yea think so or if you know you're way around with firewalls, I guess you could set it up so it lets the touch through. My network/wi-fi knowledge is close to zero though.

I had safari and youtube working for a few minutes. But I got disconnected on my laptop, because someone had reset the router. Then the ICS was turned off automatically and now I can't get it back on again. :(

At least I know it works, just gotta set it up right. :)

Yeah, it is kinda annoying to turn the firewall on and off all the time.
But no clue how I would work if I don't turn it off :(

But for now I'm happy everything works and I can use my iPod touch for 100%! :D

Hey guys, great topic

I'm trying to do the same thing, I have my laptop running vista with a wifi card inside but im using one of the t-mobile usb modem;

http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobi...th-webnwalk-plus/t-mobile/usb-modem/overview/

Should I still be able to get it working like you guys did using this and not an ethernet cable??????

I've went through the youtube video and set up a hotspot which my ipt sees but it cannot connect to it.?????

Once it goes back there is a tick next to the hotspot and I can check the ip address clicking on the blue arrow but I can't connect to youtube or safari.

Any ideas????

cheers

Try going to the settings of the connection which your laptop uses to get online. When you're there, you should see a "sharing" tab. Enable the first option and disable the second one. Hope that helps!

Hi Cache

Ok I've just tried that, the 1st box is ticked the 2nd is not, something happened as I can now see the router address under ipt settings, BUT i stll can't connect!!!!

ALSO it doesn't say cannot connect to youtube anymore it just tries to play the video for a while then says "error playing video" so I must be doing something right but I don't know how to fix it.

My firewll is off btw.

I went through the whole wi-fi song and dance a few weeks ago when I got mine, and so maybe I can help out a little (even though I'm on a Mac).

Regarding the firewall restrictions, there may be a list of exceptions for the firewall to allow through ("doors" in the firewall, so to speak). I was going to go through the trouble of setting up a specific port and exception when I saw an option to allow Personal Web Sharing through the firewall. Explore a bit in your advanced options and see if you can find this.

Also, if you can see the connection, but can't connect via Safari, go into the Wifi options and tap "Renew lease." This kind of refreshes the connection, I think, and made the internet work the first time.

And finally, when sharing internet (even if it says that your internet sharing is on) make sure that your wireless card isn't connected to any other wireless network around. Sometimes mine says it's sharing, but it's also accepting a signal from some other source (accepting means it's not broadcasting). So play with that some.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
