I'm sad to see that MR has become for the last months a less rumor site, and more importantly, an iPhone oriented news website :(

After months of getting 90% of iPhone "news" and almost nothing related to the mac, I think this site should be renamed to something more appropriate, like "welovetheiphone" or something as pathetic.

Sorry for the rant but I'm very tired of the direction this site has taken and I have been a faithful visitor for several years and even if the iPhone has become THE thing, I would like to know some rumors about the mac.

Sad times.

What's your opinion?

It's not like they're holding back rumors on Macs. Apple's focus (at the moment) is on the iPad and iPhone.

Now, had you advocated killing off the iPhone noobs, I'd be right there with you.

There is a problem with what you want. The problem is that there are no rumors for Mac right now. The latest thing that I can think of is the 22" touch screen iMac. And the last month nothing about iPhones? True, because the iPhone 4 just came out. Remember when the iPad came out and how it was nothing but iPad?

that's a great reason to ask for rumors :)
BTW, I can't recall the last time I read a true *rumor* on this site, these days it seems like a place where they collect news from other mac oriented sites (or may be the other way around, I don't know).

@Intell: true about the iPad trend.

I usually come to this site expecting to get rumors, or some inside "scoop", and all I get is iPhone this, iPad that, all news I can get elsewhere, and nothing truly new (not to mention not many mac HW related).

I understand this kind of sites move to the trends, and this is the way communities work, but I miss the old MR.

Apple has spread its business to new markets so MacRumors' focus naturally follows. Like other news stories, reports on Apple's rivals in each of its markets (computer makers, phone vendors, web-based service providers, etc.) are important to some site visitors and not to others.

I don't forsee any changes in this regard. It's true of other websites that follow Apple as well.

There are comments about this and about the site name in the FAQ:

The rumors really do follow Apple's lead, and Apple has been throwing a lot of effort at the iOS platform and the devices that run it, so it's only natural that Mac Rumors has a lot of iPhone related stories being posted to it. I mean the iPhone 4 sold 1.7 mil in 3 days. If the Macbook Pro or Mini did that, there would likely be more stories about those Macs.

I personally don't care much about the iPhone stories because I don't own one, but there's more going on at Mac Rumors than the front page. I visit other Mac sites, and Mac Rumors doesn't seem to be missing any Mac rumors, and frankly it's because they just aren't out there right now. It has its cycles though.

Press releases are not rumors, so why not let the other tech sites handle the press releases and MR go back to a strict rumor site. Most of the stories on the front page are coming from other sources now and not in house.

MacRumors has always covered news in addition to rumors...check the site's tag line. It would be silly to cover only rumors without the news.

The fact of the matter is that as Apple's popularity has grown, so has the number of people digging up info, and so of course we're going to have to link elsewhere when others discover things. The Apple "rumor" community isn't just a small handful of sites publishing an item or two a day (if that) anymore. It's a busy, dynamic arena with news and rumors flooding in from all directions all the time. Consequently, our volume of stories has gone up significantly, and so has our external linking.

Complaints like this come up from time to time and I fail to understand what people expect us to do...are we supposed to make up rumors? We publish what we have and evaluate what others are publishing in the context of other information to decide what's worth sharing. It's the same thing we've always done.

Some of the stories on the front page really have no business being there. iPhone bumpers? Is that really news worthy?

How is it not news worthy? It's an Apple product that a lot of people have been waiting for...particularly given Apple's pushing of them as a solution to the signal issue.

Not every story will appeal to every reader...

If the goal is for MacRumors to become an all in one tech site fine, but if the main mission statement is a Apple rumor site it is getting off topic.

This place is starting to feel more and more like Digg everyday.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree then, because it seems completely on-topic to me. We're far from being or trying to be an "all in one tech site".

The worst thing is when they feature 'Android News' on the front page. Utterly irrelevant.

But there's been posts on Microsoft before, Android is a competitor to Apple.

I could see your point if there was a post about BP, Cadburys or Nivea... but Android relates to Apple.

By that logic we should have Dell stories on the front page as well.

My God I totally agree!

I used to love this site, but now I hardly skim this site at all now.

I understand why you have some iPhone stuff. However actually make an article something about some iPhone got a little dent in the back of it or whatever in hell it was, WHO F'IN CARES!!!!

Indeed sad times.

I would like more Mac stuff too, but the issue is with Apple, not this site. If the site stuck just to Mac stuff, there would be lots of complaints posted about this site ignoring the other parts of Apple's business. As Apple diversifies, so too do the websites that follow it. Mac's are no longer the majority of Apple's revenue, and Mac's are no longer the primary part of this website. I wish it wasn't that way, but I hardly think the fault lies with this site. Maybe "AppleRumors" would be a more apt name, but I really doubt anyone is misled about what is here. And no one is misled twice.

Y'all should start doing what the rest of us "old timers" (pre-iPhone) users are doing:

Forum Spy allows you to filter out the iPhone, iPad and iOS garbage, and lets you see what forums are currently popular on the Macintosh side. Just edit your filter options and go!

Another method would be to exclude the iPhone/iPad/iOS forums from "New Posts", which requires a bit more work, but is spelled out quite nicely in this thread.

:) happy browsing!
