If the 17" was unusable, it wouldn't have made it for the last seven years.
If it was "too big" - bagmakers wouldn't make bags specifically for that size.
If the 17" isn't portable... you get the idea.

It's not the right computer for everyone, but neither is the MacBook Air.
 
LOVE my 17" but I've always been about desktop real estate.

The only issue I ran into is most of the desks on my college campus are a bit small to use my 17 as well as keep my class materials. The only way I made it work is I found there was one desk in the whole room that was substantially larger so I snaked it before anyone else could.

Everywhere else, from coffee shops, libraries, and just being outside, I've had zero issues with its size.

yea i like the desktop experience but portable. i hate sitting at a desk.
