Me! My primary iPad's storage tend to be dedicated to comics/manga. It's only now that 256GB is available that I can store some videos on it, too. Music, however, stays in the iPhone.

Is 256 GB even needed? Picture this, you are getting ready to head on a seven hour trip... There are <gulp> children in the SUV. Because the children are different age groups, the overhead entertainment center isn't going to satisfy everyone. You've got a conundrum. There is always streaming of content. Imagine what that will do to your data plans. Of course, if you want to have solid WiFi you have to travel by interstate the whole way which isn't good for the driver's blood pressure.
But you've got a few iPad with lots of storage. Ours are 128/128/64/64 but they will work. Before the trip, we load them up with each child's favorite movies. You bring HEADPHONES or else you will be singing Frozen songs for life. Yes, I wish I had 256, I'd load even more movies, books, magazines, songs, and games on them prior to leaving on road trips.

I don't. I'll store videos temporarily for trips, but as far as content storage goes, it's mostly for work or personal documents. I will store music on my iPhone though.
That determines the answers to all other questions in life... including 256gb vs 128gb.

I've got just over 3k songs on my iPad. Often when I'm in my office, I'll kick off a playlist.

back when the iPad Air 2 came out I upgraded from a 64GB iPad 4, and got the 128GB. Now that the iPad Pro 9.7 is out I am thinking of upgrading to that device. I am unsure if going to the 256GB would be worth it for me. I often upload some movies or TV series that I want to catch up on while traveling, but other than that, they are deleted once I return. Still a few months until I go and upgrade so I will have to think of it. BTW, I do have a playlist on my iPad that I listen to periodically. If I let it play all the way through it is about 8 hours long. All my music though is stored on my iPod Classic.

I used to do that, but found it unnecessary with iTunes Match. Now I just stream music from the iPad.

Why not, you know, actually try to TALK to them? Interact? Why do they need to be entertained all of the time?
I have a 256GB iPad 9.7 but it's not to keep my kids entertained. It's for me, when I'm on a 12 hour flight to New York or the seven hour to Singapore. I can finally keep my entire iCloud Photo Library (65GB) on an iPad, along with discographies of my twenty favorite bands, and about a dozen 1080p bluray rips. I love having this much space!

Yes. Unfortunately, when I purchased my iPad Pro 12.9" the 128 GB was the largest available. I still have about 30 GB open. I have lots of movies, photos, songs, and books taking up space.

Hold on, are you a parent of a teenager? You put a teenager girl in the car for a seven hour trip and tell her that she can't listen to her music, watch her videos, or read her ebooks... she'd be in the fetal position before we leave the driveway. The 7-year-old, she'll still talk to me but then again, it's hard to compete with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna. "Hush, Uncle Thom this is the good part."

Haha, I guess I've got it coming! Mine are 9 and 7, so they still talk (when they feel like it). Although I don't plan on letting them tune me (and others) out with devices, even when they're older. My oldest got his first iPod touch when he was two years old, and they've had no shortage of hand-me-down iPhones and iPads from their mother and I over the years. But we've always set limits on their usage; they're limited to an hour a day, and that's that. I also try to set an example for them myself, when we're together – I make a conscious effort to NOT check my phone when they're there (of course, it helps greatly that my boss is a family man!)

Agreed - the MobileLite is AWESOME! I load up a couple of 128GB SD cards with every possible movie I might want to see when I'm on a long business trip, and I'm set. It doubles as a battery backup for charging, and also serves as a wifi hotspot for sharing the hotel's wired internet connection (when they don't have wifi). Terrific device, and affordable. Oh and it streams full 1080p movies to multiple devices, simultaneously. Love that thing!

Nothing on mine. I stream everything. 32GB iPad Pro 9.7. I have found that I really don't need much storage at all now or in the future as I expect to keep everything in the cloud or stream when needed.

But what about the times when you're offline or have a bad connection? International travel, in the mountains, subways, etc? I keep everything in the cloud as well (200GB iCloud upgrade, I subscribe to iTunes Match, etc) but I don't want to have to depend on it for day-to-day stuff when networks can be so unreliable.

I haven't been in that situation to be honest, but I have about 20GB of space to save a few movies or playlists if needed. Anything else isn't really critical for me to have at all times.

That's wonderful as long as you always have a WiFi connection. The 32GB doesn't come with LTE. I'm still using my AT&T truly unlimited data plan.

Yea, I have been able to get by just tethering my phone when I need a connection. I know my uses are not everyone's though.
My phone is my music player. It's on me all the time and fits in my pocket. It makes a lot more sense as an iPod/mp3 player than an iPad does. This is probably why iPad don't even come with earbuds. I think most people probably use their phones as their main music player.

I don't keep music on my iphone or my iPad either. I use Pandora or Spotify in those cases.
My iPod however has plenty of music on it.

I do download music on my 128GB 9.7 Pro, but I don't have much. Just 7GB. I don't know where to download movies from other than Netflix's download function, so I don't use much storage, because I delete it afterwards. I have 80GB left. If I'd buy a 10.5 Pro, though, I'd get a 256. 64 is too tight.

At least now we have 512GB. Lol, this thread was from 2016 when the first 256GB iPad was released. 😀

I actually emailed Tim Cook regarding the abrupt 4 month later introduction of the 256gb size shortly after the 128gb iPad Pro, and it seems like they took it seriously with the day 1 launch of the 512gb size, albeit at $200 more.
Despite the larger price increment, I’m glad it was a day one option - it’s a better situation than buying 256gb then seeing the 512gb launched even if it were at a $100 increment instead of $200 - you’d still be stuck with how to get rid of the smaller capacity iPad.
Of course, the increment is now effectively $250 instead of $200 after the price increase across the board....
