I haven't received my 2013 iMac which after much deliberation I went with a 1TB Fusion Drive. I had considered a 256GB SSD. I am now thinking after something I read today of sending the 1TB Fusion back, getting a 256GB SSD model, adding an external 2TB USB 3.0 drive and merging the SSD and USB 3.0 into a Fusion volume. From what I understand, this can be done.

It can, but as I understand it, the Mac won't boot without being able to see both drives which could potentially lead to some problems. As far as I can tell, the fusion drive CAN be set up like this, it's not designed to be.

I've given it more thought. I will probably bring it home and see how the noise is and if I decide there is a significant issue, I can return it within my window and order the SSD model and simply use externals as such.

Please let us know how this works out for you. I'm very curious to find out if the Fusion drive is relatively quiet compared to a typical HDD. Seek noises don't bother me so much but rotational ones drive me nuts!
