When I am trying to load Empire Total War Gold edition it crashed so I assumed 8GB is not enough for today newest games. Am I wrong?

Quite possibly, it could have crashed for any number of reasons, if it genuinely needs 16GB to load a) I'd expect the manufacturer to say so loud and clear and b) It would limit their market quite markedly so I'd be surprised.

Check with the makers site for minimum requirements. No point guessing.

I am not sure I follow. What does "had to clear memory up" mean?
What error message did you get exactly?

There is no error message it just load then crash to desktop and I used memory cleaner (not sure if it is the correct name) app to clear up memory. I'm not at my rMBP at this moment. :apple:

The answer is no. Unless you are in high school or don't use a computer for anything other than the apps that come with the computer like notes only then I would get 8.

My current setup is a Windows laptop and I use Photoshop and Illustrator on a daily basis as I'm a graphic designer.
While those apps will work just fine for basic tasks with 4GB, I'd definitely suck it up on the cost and get the 8GB. You're already investing a lot of money on a computer - you don't want to hamstring yourself on something like that. RAM requirements are only going up.

There is no need to ever use any app to "clean up memory".
Why would you assume this crash was caused by any memory error?

What does "being in Highschool" have to do with anything?
How does your Laptop know in what school you are in?
Apps like note? This is entire post is complete nonsense.

Here are the requirements for Empire: Total War - Gold Edition:

Minimum System Requirements:
Processor: 2.0 GHz
RAM: 4GB
Graphics: 256MB
Free Space: 15GB

If you're trying to keep the budget down I'd just go with the 8GB ram Macbook Air. That'll come out to less than the Pro

LOL I was building robot parts in Solidworks and Mastercam for the robotics team in high school. Not to mention SkillsUSA and my design manufacturing classes.

I bet during my high school years I was doing more demanding stuff than what 75% of adults do on their PC's.

Maybe Macbook Pro is not for you I could be wrong. Windows laptop such as Dell or HP is cheap with high end dGPU and easy memory upgrade in the future. I thought 8GB is perfect for me until I started trying out playing games I realized I need 16GB. Oh well. :apple:

99.99999% of games don't require 16GB of RAM. Period.

Empire Total War Gold Edition crashed when I tried to load. Not enough memory so I had to clear memory up. This is 2012 rMBP base model. :apple:

Do you play Empire Total War Gold Edition? :apple:

I played Napoleon Total War on my Mac with only 7GB of RAM, runs perfectly fine. Also, the Mac versions of games tend to be buggy and perform terribly.

Cities in Motion 2, urban public transport simulator where every single resident on the map each have their own destination, home, and work place. My iMac handles 400% population with 1 million residents at max time compression with zero slow downs, 2-3GBs out of 7 free on the Windows side, so RAM definitely is not the problem.

in case it hasn't already been mentioned. The RAM in macbook air and macbook pro retina is soldered on the logic board and cannot be upgraded after buying.

The only user-upgradable mac is the 13 inch macbook pro non retina which you can upgrade the hard drive, DVD drive and RAM.

The requirements for the Witcher 3 is something like 6gb of RAM, but they recommend 8gb...So the minimum specs are definitely creeping up. But for the type of games that a base 2012 rMBP GPU can handle, 8gb should be plenty of RAM.

Apologies for the extended delay in replying, I didn't get any reply email notifications.. Anyhow, I've opted for an 8GB Macbook Air. Best to be on the safe side (16GB is out of my budget at the moment) since I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom besides the usual browsing and watching media.

This is a really good choice. I used my MBA for nearly 5 years and absolutely loved it. Gave it to my daughter and she has totally pimped it out with covers and stickers.

4GB rMBP here, running well
