IS 4K UHD a Must HAVE for upgrading?

As another iPad 3 user, I'm on the fence.

First gen devices at a given resolution tend to "just" be able to run them (6+, 2012 rmbp).

But as has been stated, the iPad 3 came out 4 years ago, and has since been updated 3 times with the same resolution. A bunch of phones out there drive more pixels then an iPad these days.

I'm not sure I need 4K, but I think I'd appreciate a jump to maybe 3x retina (3072 x 2304).

Honestly, with how long app developers are taking to update their apps for the iPad Pro's resolution and even the new multitasking features for any iPad, I'd like Apple to keep the iPad's resolution the same for a few more years. The resolution is already high enough that I don't feel anything is pixelated anymore, but I'd rather not have the majority of my apps looking crappy for the next few years.
