That's a ridiculous thing to say. While still pictures are bad, the iPod Touch rear cam takes surprisingly nice HD movies and other than the iPhone there's no other portable device that can edit the videos like the iPod can. I know some smartphones do have editing functionality but none does it as smoothly as iMovie does and there's also the Reeldirector app if you want something different. It makes a pretty compelling package against the Flips, the Kodak Zi6, etc, perfect for the usual target market of the iPod Touch.

The rear vidcam will allow Apple to make even more profits selling the $5 iMovie app.

If I need a pocket vidcam, I'll use a real one; like my PlaySport.

With a fairly small price difference it's clear that the iPod Touch will eat into a chunk of the market currently crowded by likes of your PlaySport and the Flips. Personally I really like the PlaySport and considered it, but decided I don't need the waterproofing and just went all the way to a bigger camera with a good video mode. When I need a quick video grab I'll probably use the Touch or just one of my phones.

"They are greedy and making more profit" is a pretty weak argument when the company is actually providing a good utility for that money spent. With the iPod you have an option to buy iMovie or any other available app like Reeldirector, edit your movies straight on your device and upload them directly to Youtube through WiFi. With a device like PlaySport, usually there's no such option available at all.

I don't own a touch; just researching it for family members who are thinking about getting one. First it was for one person who decided against it because of the poor choice in rear cam. Now a few family members are interested.

I have the PlaySport because of its waterproofing. I live in a wet winter climate. It always travels with me when I'm out and about; along with my Sansa Clip+.

And like many other naysayers, you're sidestepping the main point. The iPod Touch's rear cam takes pretty nice HD movie AND it works very well as a (quick&dirty) portable movie editor & Youtube uploader, which gives it a distinctive advantage over most other pocket cams and validates the existence of the rear cam. Do you have a legitimate concern to back up your claim of the iPod being better without the rear cam other than the ludicrious "Apple is making more profit through iMovie" argument?

Which is why these family members are interested in the touch. They're very much into social networking and the new 8GB touch would be great for them.

Here is my experience with some time with the camera. I am NOT a photogropher and do not have a DSLR or anything that high end, so please keep that in mind. I am also not an iPhone 4 owner/user, so am basing this experience on just the iPod Touch for what it offers.

General
* I LOVE the video that the device can take! Having the iPod Touch on me enables me to take impromptu video when out with the family without having to remember to bring the Video camera.
* Not too impressed with the still shots. As I've seen mentioned before, it definitely looks like something where a video still was snapped.
* For whoever said the camera should not have been included - that's your perogative, but I'm happy to have one just in case.
* Digital Zoom... er... sucks! I have not been able to do anything useful with it in any situation. Everything is just blown up and pixelated.
* Low Light - probably bad...
* Outdoors or decent lighting - good...
* The iPod Touch camera will not replace a digital camera, nor will it replace any video cameras either. Take it as something to play with and have fun with and as another alternative or option.

Specifics...

VIDEO
* Video seems to be the stronger feature between motion and still. Under GOOD lighting conditions, namely outdoors in the sun. Video actually comes out very good to me, even when uploaded to the desktop. I was at the park with my family this past weekend and shot video and it came out really good and I am very satisfied with it.

CAMERA
* Pictures come out okay to decent, but only when there is lot's of light, again, namely outdoors. None of my indoor shots look good to me and appear too dark and very grainy. It's the equivelent of taking a picture with any digital camera without the flash enabled.
* Pictures taken with great lighting conditions come out half decent. They are still grainy and might be fine for printing when they are scaled down, but not something you would want to show on a full sized computer screen.

Just my thoughts...
