Is 8% about right for a 14 minute phone call?

My last 3GS had a godly battery. Of course something happened and I had to exchange it.

The replacement? Not so much. I've already calibrated it and from 9am to 6:30pm checking my email once and some light texting my battery was at 61%. That's already terrible if you ask me.

I just took a call that lasted 14 minutes. Hung up and my battery is at 53%. This seems ridiculous to me. Should I take this in before I apply and waste another BSE?

Edit: Dropped another percent while I was typing this.

that works out at about 3 hours talk time. i would say that is a little low. How long have you had it? you need to let it have a few charge cycles to get the battery working properly.

Picked it up the day before yesterday. It's gone through two full cycles already.

This just royally sucks because I tested my last battery right before it started acting up and it got over 9 hours of usage and 2 days, 19 hours of standby. I've never had a battery that good. :(

9 hours is what they "should" be. However, no one seems to get that. I'm hoping the next model has a much better battery. I can never get better than 5 hours.

Well I don't have a data plan on my line so that could be why I got such good times before.

If that's the case then you'd figure I should be able to get the same with the new one.....

The battery life on my 3GS got quite a bit better after I'd been using it a week or more. Give it some time before you draw any conclusions about your battery's performance.

How's your signal? If you're in a marginal area it can use a lot more battery (because it increases transmission power).

Wow I completely forgot about that little fact. I am at work where I'm lucky to get three bars and a majority of the time I see one bar or "Searching...".

I'll see how she fares over the weekend.

Not to be picky, but how do you check e-mail on the iPhone when you don't have a data plan on it?

Hmm, 3G enabled? I notice I run through the battery a whole lot faster with it on.

Yeah, but if I turn it off I get nothing at all. Probably has a lot to do with the composition of the building I'm in. There's plate glass windows right in front of me and if I stand on the other side where I'm looking right now I get five bars.

There may be an interesting way to test two different possible culprits.

Try this: call whomever called you during that 14 minute phone call. Tell him or her to hold on. Then walk outside your building. Now ask the person to call you back right away. Hang up. Note the battery percentage. Talk for 14 minutes again. Hang up. Note battery percentage.

See if the % change is much lower now or is still about the same as the 8% from before.

I used to get about 20 hours of standby on my 3G at 3.0. It might be 3.1 - it's messing my battery up pretty good.

Or he could just call his work phone/home phone. Idk about you but my friends aren't always up to test my handsets battery life!

This might be placebo, but every 3GS I've had (I had to get it exchanged twice so far) seems to have much improved battery life after a few charge cycles. Give it a couple days and see if it improves.
