So I currently have a 2014 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB ram and 512GB SSD. It still runs well for everyday tasks but I really want something with 16GB ram and 1TB SSD. I've been looking on the used market for a 2015 MacBook Pro with those specs (13" or 15" is fine) and the price is usually around $1,300 to $1,600 Canadian. I don't mind buying one with a smaller SSD because I can just buy the SSD adapter and a bigger SSD drive. Is it worth the money or just do the SSD upgrade on my 2014 MBP? I perhaps don't need 16GB ram but it would be nice to have the headroom. The reason I would like the 1TB SSD is so I can import all my CDs in lossless (ALAC).

as you seem to just need a SSD upgrade, I'd upgrade just the SSD and save money for a 16" later

Well I'd be waiting another five years at least before the 16" comes down to an even somewhat reasonable price on the used market. The current price for any Apple product is ridiculous. I still even have an iPhone 6S cause a new one would be too expensive.

Are you talking about selling your current computer to get this one, and if so what would the difference in price be? Also, how much is "reasonable" for a computer?

In the end, I feel like you're potentially going to be paying a lot of money for what amounts to an 8GB RAM upgrade.

I love my 2015 so much that I'm seriously considering not trading it in for the credit Apple offered for it toward my 16". Other than battery issues, it's been the best machine I've ever owned.

However, there's a simple solution to this. You have an SD card slot. You can get a 512GB MicroSD card for under a hundred bucks and a flush mount adapter that lets it stay in all the time. Here's one

Well that and going from 512GB to 1TB SSD. But if I can get a 15" I'd also gain a bigger screen and a dedicated graphics card.

I can do the SSD upgrade on mine or a 2015 model with the adapter mentioned in the pinned thread in the MBP section here. I'd rather go that route.

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro 13" that runs fine and does what I need, no plans to replace it.

IF you can keep going until early 2020, I suggest that you "hold whatcha got" for now, and wait for the 2020 MBP 13". It will probably arrive around March-April.

It will come with the new keyboard (same as on the 16"), and perhaps a few other small improvements. Perhaps even a -slightly- larger display.

BTW, think long and hard:
Do you really, REALLY need a 1tb drive?
Or... could some of the stuff you would put on it... do just as well on an external SSD, such as a Samsung t5?

Same here, love my 2015 i7 2.2GHz 16GB MBP - the keyboard was the last of the "good design".

Trade in came so low from Apple ($700) that I will keep her.
To avoid the 2016-2019 butterfly keyboards, I am looking at the 16" MBP.
Currently selling my: 2010 MBP, 2015 MBA, 2017 MBA to fund the purchase of the 16".

The price of an item usually reflects the demand for the item.

If it's worth it or not depends entirely on the person buying it.

If it was me, I would upgrade and keep my current 2014 MBP and start saving money towards a 2020 or later MBP (put some money in a computer fund each month).

Perhaps that would be better. However I cannot upgrade ram on this Mac so I'm stuck with 8GB.

I'd rather have a larger SSD internally instead of using external drive. I have an external drive for backups but that's it.

So if I simply upgrade the SSD in my current 2014 MBP which one would be the best option? I would like a 1TB.

But you could update the storage and 8GB RAM, although not desirable, should be enough to work for you.

Also, do you need the portability ?

If not, an iMac might be a good replacement.

Well I have though of getting a Mac Mini and connect it to my 4K TV. I would just use a wireless keyboard and mouse or trackpad. I don't have a desk and I prefer not to have one. Photo below of my current setup.

If the 2014 MacBook Pro works for you then the 2015 will work even better. I only parted with mine because I love the 16" with the new keyboard. If Apple would have released the 16" with the same butterfly keyboard I would have kept the 2015 15".

I do photo and video editing and the only issue I ever had was the fan blasting really loud during the most basic photo editing task. It started to get a little annoying.

It's just that the more current macs are way too expensive for me. If I can find a 2015 15" with 16GB and 1TB with dedicated graphics I'd be good for quite a while longer.
