Did Apple go far enough with $29 battery replacements?

Do you think Apple making a battery replacement $29, which will restore your iPhone back to it's advertised speed until it degrades again, is enough to make you a happy iPhone owner?

It's a great way to divert attention from the issue.

You'll notice that Apple didn't say they'd fix the issue. They said they'd give you a reduced cost battery. Free candy sounds good right? Enough to distract you from the problem that they won't actually fix?

And for those who will mention that Apple says an update is coming that will allow the customer to see in more detail what's happening, well - they didn't say they'd fix the issue in that statement either.

There is no software update that can fix the way batteries degrade over time. They won't release multiple iOS versions to cater to every little child's desire and they won't scale back our current iOS version to keep the minority experiencing issues happy. You'll buy the battery replacement and update your device with their new iOS or you won't.

I am not saying there is an iOS update that can fix it. That isn't the issue.

But putting out an update and saying that update fixes the issue (which Apple did) and it turning out to be a case of CPU throttling and NOT fixing the issue is an entirely different thing.

Isn't throttling to prolong the stability of your phone, at the cost of speed, a solution to the battery issue that all phones suffer from?

Or are you suggesting they throttle iphone out of the box so it requires less from the CPU from the beginning? You won't have to throttle when the battery degrades if it's already throttled the moment you get it.

For iPhone 6/6s owners, it should be a free replacement, everyone else regular $80.

Or give the 6/6s owners the option to downgrade their OS. Which you'll still need to eventually replace your 3 year old battery.

What you are saying the root cause of the issue is a smaller battery than what should have been installed in the first place...like 3000mah minimum for example.

I think it’s a good price. If I didn’t upgrade to an X. I would have 100% have done this.

If my wife didn’t upgrade as well. I would have 100% spent the $25 on hers as well.

Imagine the outrage if instead of trying to fix the problem they did nothing and let hundreds of millions of old batteries die.

"I have to spend $79 to get a new battery! They could have fixed this with software!" would have been the outcry.

That is not that point. They should have TOLD us about the issue. Hiding it makes them look guilty. The throttling was done to drive sales.

I feel sorry for the independent phone repair guys. There goes half their business if not more.

The throttling is to stop your phone from shutting down abruptly due to battery degradation. The new update is making battery health more transparent so users will be aware that their battery has reached the point where your device might be throttled thus giving you the option of getting your battery replaced. What would you rather your phone shuts down when your battery can’t handle it or you your phone being throttled?

Sounds like it fixes the issue to me. Until there is a new type of battery that doesn't degrade, this sounds like a pretty good solution...

Agreed. And even the cheaper price Makes it more affordable from $79-$29, especially if you have those who have multiple iPhones in a household, that's a significant savings for replacement batteries.

Literally looked up a local shop to replace a battery before this article came out. I thought $50 was a steal.

Should’ve never throttled

But $29 decimates any incentive to go any route OTHER than apple official service repair imo
I had decided about 2 weeks ago to purchase a quality 3rd party battery for my iPhone 6. But since I'm a procrastinator, I hadn't actually ordered it. Until yesterday morning. Of course, Amazon and the vendor were all over that and shipped it this morning.

It'll be more trouble to try to cancel or send it back.

So I'll probably go to the Apple Store to get an official replacement for $30. And I'll have an extra battery sitting on a shelf for when the battery needs to be replaced again.

Man, if only I had procrastinated a few days longer.
