I don't care about the security on AppleTV's, because they are not like a Mac, when they will run anything..No web browser for one.

I worry more about the features that i we hate to stay with 3rd gen... as well

Still going strong here... I've switched it onto eithernet away from Wif-fi, as there is issues on the last update.

Not due to signal strength, It keeps disconnecting in the middle of playback... regardless of a restore.

It could be due to placement, but if it was it would happen more often.
When you say disconnecting during playback, is that within the apps like YouTube on the device, or during airplay from an iOS device?

Still use a couple (a 3rd gen and a 2nd gen) to stream audio over AirPlay. I rarely use the TV features and only watch the Apple Keynotes on my 3rd gen.

Unless there are any critical security issues announced I'll probably use them until they stop working. The new Apple TVs have only got HDMI outputs so wouldn't work in my current set ups.

How, exactly, do you expect your Apple TV to be exploited/hacked/compromised?

First off, realize that in almost all situations, there is no way an attacker outside of your home network can access it directly. Unless you have set up a forwarding rule on your router, and why would you do that?

Perhaps some attack might be possible from WITHIN your home network.

Certainly there is the possibility of a rogue app, but that has nothing to do with the Apple TV version. It would be something missed in the App Store review process or subsequently undiscovered/unreported.

There could be some CONTENT downloaded by an app that makes use of some exploit. Most vulnerable would be apps that access random stuff from the Internet rather than just streaming videos from a catalog.

In any case, not sure why Apple TV would be a target in the first place. Your valuable viewing history? Bitcoin mining?

The AppleTV 3 even has the ability to use 2 factor authentication. Just put in your password followed by the 2 factor 6 digit code. It’ll login to your AppleID and you’re set. They still make great Airplay and iTunes Match boxes.
