Best Wishes for your son's Birthday. :) He sounds like a great kid; clearly he's multi-talented.

(Next year he'll be a Double-Digit. ;) )

Thanks and yes he is a great kid (I would think that even if he wasnt mine ;))
LOL - that's what he said last night!!! He also told me that since his birthday is on a Saturday, he's having a birthweekend instead of just a day...more fun for everybody!!!

if u really think he will use it, by all means, get it for him. u said that he has kept his psp in good condition, so he will probably keep this in good condition as well. the fact that a few games broke is irrelevant because there is nothing like that for the ipod. just headphones and a case, if u buy that as well, which u definitely should. and, this will last longer than some video game, because he can beat the games in a week and then have nothing to do with them and have to buy a new one. with the ipod, there are plenty of free apps in the app store that he can download with your help. plus, u can control what he can download, watch, or view on the internet via wifi

I don't think it is too young I have a cousin thats 7 years old that knows his way fairly good around a iPod Touch! he knows how to play games download games and play music/movies etc . I didn't even have to teach him how to use one ether he figured it out on his own.

My 3 year old uses my 2G iPhone that I no longer need after getting my 3GS.

Yeah I sold my new iPod touch to my sister, which she bought for her 3yr old son! So to answer the question of whether 9 is too young, I don't think so. He/she'll know how to use it, it's a question of whether you think you are spoiling them, but what's the harm in spoiling someone once in a while, assuming they've been good..

Yes, he's too young. Go with the 1st generation shuffle. Responsible or not, it will be broken in a month.

16, 17 - maybe ... but not 9.

12 year old loves his. Only wish he had a chance to get one earlier. Since he's been using it, he's been asking me how to play Led Zeppelin and AC/DC songs on the guitar.

If it helps, I'm 12 and I own a 2.8ghz Macbook Pro and an 16GB iPod Touch. I'm very talented when it comes to computing and technology and I have a scholarship at my school for those reasons.

Just understand that if your son really wants an iPod Touch, he'll take alot of care with it. I think that your son would love access to all the great games, the portable internet browsing, and music/video. He seems like he's a bit like me, so I think he'd be really full of joy if you got him an iPod Touch and he would enjoy it for a while to come.

Happy birthday to your son!

You've already reached the big day - i was going to say you could consider a refurb Nano for $99, that gives access to movies & more games. My kids all got them for Christmas as alternatives to the DS's they wanted.

I just bought myself a 2G Touch, and i'll buy the new version when it comes out for ME, and the kids will get to share this one. THe middle child is starting on a variety of therapies for her special needs, and the others will have a lot of sitting around to do. I have loaded it up with Math Games for them :D

But really, the kids treasure their Nano's and take good care of them. 9 is about the lower end of my buy it for them range (as opposed to sharing mine), but it all depends on the kid.

Happy Birthday to your son! In the last month i've had a new 10yo and 5yo :D

Why don't kids play outside anymore?

When I was nine, my favorite "toys" were my baseball glove and my Huffy bike.

During the summer, I'd play outside from when I got up in the morning until my mom called me in when it was time for dinner. Then I'd go back outside and catch fireflies until it was time to go to be.

When I have kids, they won't be getting iPods until they actually have a real use for them. Like when they start listening to music while running or driving.

Unfortunately, by the time I have kids, there will probably be an iPod PreNatal, which will be implanted in kids' brains while they're still in the womb.

Get him the Touch. If he took good care of the PSP I see no reason he'd mistreat the Touch.

....But seriously, if you are considering something like an iPod Touch, I would suggest getting him an old mac with photoshop installed on it, or something more productive and creative than an ipod.

My parents would never give me ANY gift that I could not use to create or learn. I hated them for it when I had to go to a friends house to play sega- because I was stuck with a grip of tinkertoys or whatever, but in retrospect I am very grateful. (And I appreciate my 360 that much more now :D)

Indeed! When I was nine, all my parents had was a Tandy (98-99, if I can recall correctly). Yes, EXTREMLY outdated but they refused to upgrade - I can remember the first REAL computer I used was a Performa in Catholic shool (aka, an actual GUI:D). And my next computing expirience was in an A/V lab in high school; basically, I was amazed with the sheer capabilities that these machines could pull off.

I am casting my vote for an older computer with Photoshop/other prosumer app on it. If the kid wants to do music/vids/games, then there is the REAL machine to do it on. Sure a Touch would be cool, but at the same time it is not the same expirience as manipulating images or sound.

I am not so much worried about your kid, I am more worried about his friends etc. I might be willing to say yes, but only if he was using it at home or in the car with you. Not allowed to take it to school or on camp or anything, a shuffle or other low end ipod is temptation enough for some to make it walk, let alone an iPod Touch which most likely jumps up in the desirability stakes.

My now 13 yo niece has been using her moms iPod Touch for a while now, no real concerns about use at home... once you leave home i worry.

Wow, I'm glad I'm not under your dictatorship.

"You can have an iPod Touch only when you're old enough to be responsible behind the wheel of a several thousand pound steel automobile." Laaaame. :p

I think some responsible 11-year-olds can have one.

Mine still do.... and the OP posted her son was involved in a variety of sports.

Until you HAVE kids, don't judge those of us that DO have kids and are making some parental decisions. That kind of advice will frost your behind when you are making them for your own kids.

We travel 60-90 minutes one way to the doctors office, and all don't like the same music. Sitting in the waiting room while your sister gets an auditory processing test for 2 hours is pretty boring....

My middle childs favorite movies are her National Geographic Kids documentaries on her iPod. This child has vision and auditory issues that make reading a chore for her - but audio books work well and she loves them.

We have listened to a TON of classics from Audible on those drives... books i couldn't read aloud to them AND drive.

Really, what i'm saying is, don't knock it until you've been there :D

(and for the record, no headphones are allowed in the "public" areas of the house - nor while playing in the yard, nor in restaurants or out in public, or anyplace else it would be considered rude)

Right now though, they are using them as background music for the fashion show the 5yo talked the 13yo into having with her (it's raining outside).

This is maybe the best advice possible.

I kind of laugh at those without kids trying to tell someone WITH kids what to do and/or not do.

I have friends of mine who are just starting to have kids and they are so different from what they once were BEFORE the kids were born. The tough talk and all that....goes out the door and a new chapter starts

If he asks for it and if his friends have it, then he's not too young for it. Just make sure he doesn't have your iTunes password.

Eh. Make sure you monitor him 80% of the time on Safari. If you give him entire free reign on the Internet, he may get an idea about sex, pornography, ect. Since he isn't monitored, he could easily look it up. No matter what.

Jeez, an iPod touch for a 9 year old...
I was around 7 when the Game Boy Advance came out, and I dropped that thing so many times it's not funny. I still have it and it still works just fine, though it is hardly in mint condition anymore :p .

I would have to say that if the iPod touch is built at least half as good as the GBA, it will last your son a few years, I've had my iPod touch sense December 2007 and it works just fine and I've dropped it a few times. The first item I REALLY took good care off was my Nintendo DS. It sound like your son took really good care of his PSP, I think he would treat the iPod even better.

Hope he had a nice birthday.

PS: Get the iheartradio app ;)

So, thanks for again for all the posts. Like I said if I can only spend $80 for an itouch i'll do it, if not whatever we get him will be just fine!!!
If he is so well-rounded, so gifted, and totally fine with whatever you get, why are you freaking out on these forums in an attempt to find the answer?

Using your kids to blow your own trumpet...pathetic.

WOW...really didn't freak out or "blow my own trumpet", was just looking for info on durability and such from people that own the device. Sorry your low self confidence caused you to respond in a hateful way.

But for everyone else: THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES
I didn't get him the touch (maybe christmas?) he had a few friends over, went to the drive-in (for the 1st time), got a couple PS3 games and his team won their Championship baseball game and he had a blast. He had a great birthday weekend. :)

One thing i'd probably suggest is a case like the Otterbox. I stress with my kids holding mine - i know it's going to end up on the floor. I'm waiting to see if my STBXH is getting an iPhone, then i'll order to save on shipping. I'd probably worry more about his friends than him :D

BUT, CONGRATS to him on the win!!!!!!!!!!!!
