Maybe the speedier CPU is noticeable for games, but I'm positive that more people are interested in having a camera than playing a first-person shooter on a tiny screen with no controls.

Faster will make a big difference in Safari. If I could spend half the time waiting for pages to load or redraw, it would make a big difference.

I would love a still camera.. not so excited about the video only camera like the nano has though. I would like the mic though.. would be nice for the guitar tuner apps.

The camera for me WAS thee dealbreaker, i went out and got the nano, after i was PLANNING on getting the 3g touch, with a camera. I was HIGHLY dissapointed!

I think it was bad by apple, AND if they did put a camera on it, it would destroy their competition, not only the Zune, sansa, etc. BUT have u ever seen these chinease pmp players with cameras??? people love them, and if the touch had a DECENT camera, these chinese mp4 players would be SMASHED!

You're protocol 'consumer' numero uno!... Apple wants you to buy the Nano ;)

...don't worry. They will release one with a camera. It would be dumb of them not to! - too much money to be made in the app store, and Apple may even wait till feeling the "need" when the market is saturated on the Touch is near(hope not). Or, some say production problems, and/or Mr. jobs says - it is a gaming machine!

...Touch sales are still doing well, so they are doing what any other company would do - waiting till it "really" needs a cool new feature...

I hope it is as close as early 2010 :D

The Gen2 and Gen3 iPod Touch supports a headset with microphone... (and possibly bluetooth mic, now with OS 3.1) not as convenient as a built-in Mic, though.

Yeah, I know... I just don't want to have to keep up with a thumbtack mic or get earphones with a mic. Would be so much more convenient if it was built in.

Not really, but it is a good plus. People with an iPod touch probably have a cell phone with a camera on it. You can make some type of arguement why one would need to take pictures with their iPod when they have a camera on their phone.

It's not necessary for me but others obviously would like to have the option. I don't even use the camera on the iPhone. I'd rather use a dedicated camera.

I think the best benefit that a camera would bring to an iPod Touch would be for gaming, yes, what Apple now intends to market the device as.

How could you play an augmented reality game on the iPod Touch without a camera? Google streetview?? Well, ok if you are able to remain connected to WiFi.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, Nintendo added two cameras to the DSi and this is helping it maintain sales.

As for SJ saying the camera wasn't included to keep costs down, well, in the quantities Apple would be buying them, the cameras would cost well under $2 each. I cannot see how such a small increase in cost would hurt Apple that much, given that it could drive more sales.

If the $199 target was so essential, why not add it to the 32 and 64 gig varients only?

What would have been good for the iPod touch would be a rearward facing video / stills camera for capturing videos, augmented reality, etc and a forward facing stills only camera for adding photos to games.

As a side note, I find it hard to believe that Apple still haven't added a forward facing video camera to the iPhone for video calls. Mind you, I would guess that AT&T wouldn't want video calls on their data shy network.

Finally, given that Apple have open APIs for the dock connector, would it be possible for a 3rd party to develop camera attachments?

Phil

I never see myself using a camera on the iPod touch.. I see the positive is that I didn't have to buy a new case for my 64GB!

A lot of the social apps let you upload photos. It's why I moved from the iPod touch to the iPhone 2G and got rid of my old phone in the process.

I was going to purchase the top-of-the-line touch but purchased the nano because it had a camera. Then yesterday, I started 2nd guessing myself on the other features that the itouch have to offer and was thinking of trading my nano in (10% loss) for the touch.

So this morning I started researching all of the reviews on the new touch and even though there were some upgrades this was a pretty mild upgrade for touch to say the least.

So my thoughts are should I get the touch now? ... and my decision is ...

I will wait until next year because APPLE will be forced to do a MAJOR MAJOR upgrade then with a camera and MORE features then you could shake a stick at. If I trade-up now not only will I lose 10% on my Nano (video) but I will be stuck with a $400 touch that will be TOTALLY obsolete (in a big way) upgrade) as compared to next years model. This would have been a double wammy for me.

Also, if I wait:

- I get to enjoy a great (small) mp3 player with FM / Camera for a year AND
- I will be able to give it to my daughter next Sep while I upgrade to the TOTALLY redesigned Touch making this years model look like a Windows ME

Looking forward to next year :)

Currently, cameras are for phones. The touch isn't a phone. Therefore, I don't think the touch should have a camera on it.

This is about the most moronic thing I've heard all day on many levels. First off, the iPod Nano has video, which is another ridiculous choice over the iPod touch, but that's another story. Secondly, with all of the apps that could take advantage of a camera in the iPod Touch, with respect to games, graphics applications, etc., it really was a shortsighted move by Apple not to include one.

For those that say it would put it too close to the iPhone, that's another ridiculous comment, as at the end of the day, the iPhone is a phone, and that's the primary reason that its purchased over an iPod.

They also need to put 3G into the iPod touch as well. There are many of us who already have a phone, could care less about creating a utility belt of additional phones, and would like to simply have an iPod with improved internet access. Charge me a small fee per month for access if you like.

Again, Apple is missing the financial boat here.

Riddle me this.

Is a camera really necessary on the iPhone?

^this..
as a matter of fact.. is a camera really necessary on any phone? no.. its only there because there is a demand for it. it is also a "gimmick"

IMO..if iPod touch had the same camera as the 3GS the iPod Touch would be an amazing device, and it would double if not triple the sales of ipod Touch.. of course iPod touch will sell REALLY well regardless..

Like I said before yes it is necessary because the iPhone would be seen as a joke since just about every phone on the market has one. Is there a demand for an ipod with a camera? Yes on sites like this one maybe but I haven't seen the ipod touch sales go down because they didn't dare put one in.

I think your claim that it would double if not triple sales of the iPod Touch is just bold speculation. While it would be a big deal it isn't something that improves the quality of the device. The only good it would do is increase app sales perhaps. Then again we have no idea.

I would rather they add features that make the device better at what it already does than adding new crap that will wear out it's novelty after New Year's Day passes.

I feel like a lot of people want a camera and/or camcorder because the iPhone has one. If you are one of those people why do you want a camera and/or camcorder so badly? After they put one on the nano I understand the outrage but the classic doesn't have one and I don't see anyone complaining about that.

Putting a camera on the device will just further blur the lines between iPhone and iPod Touch. To me it would just be a cheap gimmick to draw in customers instead of improving the device by adding sound and visual quality features and a radio. Making it a better music player should be their main focus.

Most people have cell phones and out of those people most of them have camera phones. It would just be a camera overload IMO. Agree or disagree what do you think about the iPod Touch not having a camera.

It doesn't need a camera but it does need the internal microphone.

Sprint's Mi-Fi is perfect for this. Not everything you want has to be built in.

i noticed that half of the correspondents here, were probably the 22+ against +111 people that voted in my Do you want a camera/microphone on the ipod touch? YES or NO!:D https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/784804/

I WANT A CAMERA!!!!!!:D

I can't afford an iphone 3G S

I have a blackberry curve

I have a 2.0 MP camera

Not a 3.0 MP camera!

I want a huge digital device that can take pictures on the go have my music, or games or even film videos so I can post them on you tube.com:cool:

I don't understand why they put a camera on the Nano but not the Touch. I think a camera would better suit the Touch.
