Im buying a iPod Nano 4G in a couple of days and was wondering if a case is really necessary? Iv heard many people say that they have been using it for a long time and still no scratches on the screen or any where else for that matter.

Just wanted to hear some opinions on this.

I did not bother to buy a case for my 4g nano. It still looks very good. The only place I can see obvious wear is on the white labeling on the back (i.e. the white apple logo). That seems to show scratches. But the actual body and screen both look fairly un-damaged after extensive time next to keys and whatnot in my pocket.

I treat mine pretty well, but there is still some damage. The corners of the aluminum body are kinda rounded...all four corners. I have no idea how it happened.

I've only had my nano for about 6 weeks and most of that time i've kept it in a clear hard case. Mine also has visible scratches on the apple logo. The screen has 1 tiny scratch i can see. The case doesn't cover the screen but it does mean that when i place the ipod on a hard surface (screen side down) then the screen can't touch the surface. I find that when using the case it doesn't get in the way of using the ipod although if my fingernails were any shorter i wouldn't be able to use the hold switch.

I use an Invisible Shield on mine, then pop it in a sock. Main thing I like to protect on all my iPods is the screen in case it gets scratched.

I suggest getting a Griffin Technology iClear case. Speck Technology has their See-Thru case on sale today online, so grab it as soon as possible!

I use a case on mine. It's not just for scratch protection, but drop protection. No matter how hard you try, accidents do happen. Whether it'd be a rude person rushing past you and knocking it out of your hand, or you slipping on wet floors, you gotta protect your iPod from life's unpleasant surprises ;). And maybe I'm just a little OCD about scratches, but it's almost impossible to maintain an iPod scratchless without a case on.
