Hi, after a really rough year we've treated ourselves and got a Sony STRDN-1080 receiver to use with our late 2012 Mac Mini based home theatre system. However I haven't been able to get the Sony receiver to recognise the Mac Mini and to process 5:1 surround sound from it, even when using a HDMI 2 convertor. I've also connected our late 2013 MacBook Pro and that didn't work either. I wonder, do any of you might have any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how or if we can resolve it please? Interestingly connecting the Mac Mini directly to our OLED TV via HDMI allows the surround sound to work, but it should work when connected with the HDMI to the receiver.

I'm not sure if this applies to that model Mac, but it should

the headphone jack also optical out , you just need a mini-toslink cable.
you can either get a mini to regular cable, or an adapter that goes on the end of a toslink to toslink cable.

Thanks waw74. Is it possible just using HDMI?

I have my Late 2012 Mini connected to DN1080.
What do you mean by "Sony receiver to recognise the Mac Mini"?
To get 5.1 sound, you need to open Audio MIDI Setup.app and configure multichannel output.
You will never see a Mac listed by name under devices, because Macs lack the HDMI-CEC function.

Thanks Priitv8. What I meant was that when I have my late 2012 Mac Mini plugged directly into the STRDN-1080 using a premium HDMI of which I’ve tried a few, the latter does not show in the former by name. You’ve kindly just explained this though! The other problem I’m having is that when I have the Mac Mini plugged directly into the STRDN-1080 using a premium HDMI, then only some, but not all video files play in 5:1. I’ll post a screenshot of the audio midi screen as this has strangely changed from 8ch out to 2ch.
