I Went For

13 because The choice in the poll was that or under ten....I would say 11? But heck kids these day's hack NASA at a far younger age, I guess it's not he actual use of the device, more the TLC side of it.

My younger children were familiar with the use of Mac equipment from a very early age. My 4 year old daughter could do just about anything with my iPad 1 but she did tend to mess it up from time to time.

When they started asking for stuff it was alway's "Dad can I have a phone like yours"? But that's for a different thread.

Ask youself these questions:
She's four years old and you think that it is safe to let her go on youtube by herself with almost no way of making sure bad things appear?
Do you want to be bugged constantly for the Apple ID password so she can download the free apps? If you are just going to give her the password, can you trust her not to spend lots and lots of money on apps and games?
Do you think she will not bury her self in it and totally ignore you?

If you answered those questions in such away that it will let her get an itouch, then go right ahead, she's your sister.
But I agree with teh rest of people. 4 is way to young for an itouch. You should probably just get her a Nano 6th gen (the touch screen one that is small). Or just get her a DSi, 3DS, or DSXL. i am sure there is some way to put music on that.

If you get an iTouch, 4th gen if you want a camera. that is the only really big dif between 3rd and 4th gen. Also If you want it engraved, you can only do that on apple.com, and they do not sell the older models once a new one comes out. In that situation you are stuck with teh 4th gen.

A little bit late into following this discussion.

IMHO.....no, it's not too much. But, there are caveats to that statement. A lot of good info already, so I won't repeat too much.

I'm a parent of 7 & 8 year olds (14 months apart)....we went through this.

At 4/5/6, we did it supervised (literally playing with it with them, mostly educational apps). All this with our iPhones, and using a time limit.

At 7, they got them as Christmas gifts (iPod Touch 3rd generation). I've set them up with pretty heavy restrictions (no Safari/Mail/Youtube/App store/Deleting apps/etc....). And, it only connects to the outside world when in our home. It's an iPod or game player only when it leaves our wifi range.

But, when it's in our home, they can text or call their 1 best friend, and immediate family (mom/dad/grandparents). We use TextNow, and it's pretty good for this (and free, save for the purchase price).

Even at 7 & 8, where we are now, they do have a 'schedule' of things to do. Some of that time is a period of either iPod time or TV time. They don't get to do both. We even make sure that we have the iPods charging every night now, as we've found them trying to sneak them overnight to stay up and play games (they love Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and Spy Mouse).

I hope that Apple will add to the restrictions app being able to restrict the camera and/or video camera. That is a bit too much responsibility for that age group, IMO, and the reason we went with the 3rd gen (bought as refurbs since the 4th gen had just come out).

This technology is our kid's future, but it should be introduced appropriately.

Totally off topic....but kind of appropriate...One of my customers pointed out the other day....is that most high school kids don't know what real 'film' is, it's truly a digital generation.
