Are you kidding me?? You have to pay for Final Cut Pro!?!? OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!! This stuff is used by pro video editors and it competes with other pro applications like Avid Xpress Pro. How can you expect it to be free?!?!?!?!

i am as big an apple fanatic as the next MR regular, but i can never get over the lengths we will go to justify some of apple's rather limited offerings.
it is not at all unreasonable to ask for a lighter, svelter macbook. the response is *not* that should the user should work out more, but that apple should offer light weight, lower power, ultra long lasting options.
apple represents design more than any other major computer maker at the moment, and this is the primary area that they are failing. the only peecees i ever occasionaly admire are the featherweight sonys and ibms.
considering what thin did for the ipod, it seems like a no brainer for the laptop. i would give up an internal cd drive in a flash for a 3 lb 6 hour machine with the 12" glossy.

Given that Apple's profitable - quite so - I don't see any real strength to arguments that they "need" to make lighter consumer laptops. If you find a better, lighter laptop, buy it.
Or buy a used 12" PB.
I wish the MBs had better graphics, and I'd be happy if they weighed three ounces, but the simple fact is that it doesn't seem to be hurting Apple to make them the way they do.

So while 5.2 pounds is not that much, it sure is compared to 2 pounds.
BTW, I would love to see Apple come out with a sub-notebook with a 10.4 inch 1024x768 screen.

Yeah 5.2 lb is like but 4.6lb would be a huge noticble diffence over all. Any one who done backpack should be able to tell you that 1lb makes a noticble diffence even when you packs are 40-50lb and the wieght is on your hips not your shoulders.
Now laptop in backbacks or a bag of any type is going to be carried by on the shoulders and that takes a lot more engery than if it was on the hips and even more noticible than on the hips and 1lb makes a noticble diffence there even when it is less tha 1/40 of a change in the over all weight.
Some of you should try putting 10-15lb in your back back carry it around for a while then remove 1lb and see how much of a change it makes.
I on the side that doesnt mind carriering around the 5.2 lb but if I was taking my laptop with me everywhere and always had it on me yeah I would like to have it reduce in wiehgt some. It makes a noticble change in how quickly you start feeling the wieght with just a .5lb differnced in wieght.
Yeah books and other things are still going to be most of the weight but cutting wieght in the laptop is great.

1. Flip4Mac didn't work for me, and as for paying for Final Cut Pro Universal - I already have shelled out loads for the OS9 version if FCP, and the upgrade fee is £140 ($260).
2. Heat - it was a lot hotter than my Dell gets. Maybe all the Duo machines get this hot.
3. Weight - at 2.4kg, it's more than twice as heavy as my current Dell X1. OK, so my Dell isn't as powerful and it's Windoze, but when you travel as much as I do, the size/weight factor makes a difference, esp if you don't want to check in your bags.
We have a MacMini and a iMacG5, and I was hoping to add a super-light weight laptop to the collection. Sounds like I'll have to go for the Sony SZ1XP...

I had a 12" Powerbook and ordered a 2Ghz MB (never having seen one in the flesh). I expected it to look exactly like the iBook, but during this weekend I saw the MB in a department store and it blew my mind. It's thinner, sleeker and doesn't feel that much heavier than the iBook.
Currently I'm using my partner's Acer TravelMate C310 until my order arrives, this thing weighs 2.9 Kgs (6.4 pounds) yet my partner happily carries it around all over the place.
Apparently the MB is heavier than the previous iBook, and I'm not sure why, but frankly given it's sleek new design, it's thinner, and it's really not that much heavier I really can't see the problem. What about those people lugging around a 17" MBP??

As far as the weight goes, my MacBook replaced my banged-up 12" PB. I don't really notice the difference carrying around the two, along with my other stuff. Since I carry around my laptop every day, I'd prefer something a bit heavier and sturdy to something light that I feel like I have to baby. And honestly, the MacBook feels a bit sturdier than my PowerBook did.
But of course, if Apple could build a laptop that was a little lighter, that'd be great. But so far, the MacBook is the absolute perfect laptop for me - a great combo of size and power.

I believe Apple is most likley going to introduce a smaller pro notebook. The same specs as the MacBook with a slightly higher price point($1999CAD) and with the option of a matte screen.
