Different people can have different interests
and that’s the thing. in my whole post I said “I”. never once did I say that this is stupid or no one would want this. I was not speaking for y’all.

for *me*, I would not want or need this because of the stated reasons…

never have. when I go out, pods go in the ears and the case goes into the pocket or bag. Apple Watch on the wrist.
So you do take the case with you. In that situation, it would be nice not having to carry another device. (I never liked having something on my wrist.)

that makes sense. for me, I actually like having something on my wrist. I can’t stand things in my pockets.

I can see the use case for a screen, but I just would not use it.

and honestly I could just go out the house with the pods and my Watch without the case. it’ll all still work.

I have a Polyphonic set that I won at an event last year and it has a screen on the top of the charging case. It helps you connect them to devices, check the charge levels and set the ANC settings without having to use a device. I think it would be like the TouchBar, some will like it, some will not.

No screen. I would like to see a duplication of the same controls present on the AirPods themselves, but something I can feel with my hand in my pocket without seeing it.

They will never add a screen to the AirPods case, would make the already bulky case even worse, and cut into Watch business. If they went in this direction, they'd essentially need to iPodify the case, else it would just be half-assed.

Sounds "logical" to me Mr Spock :D

Exactly the mentality that will be their downfall overall then

Steve knew this well
Eat your own lunch, or someone else will -- see: iPod Mini

(applies far beyond this particular product idea and discussion)

Can devices share one eSIM yet? I’d love it if carriers had an eSIM where you could have the same sim and account with an option for add-on devices. iPad, AirPods, watch. I don’t want five accounts for my cellular devices.
They can, or are you being sarcastic. If your phone provider doesn't have it then switch

No I wasn’t being sarcastic. As far as I was aware you had to have a different eSIM connected to your account for each device. I’ve not had a cellular iPad or Apole Watch for over 5 years though so perhaps it’s changed. I’m in the UK though so maybe we’re behind.

One thing they definitely should add is change the single LED to a row of them so you can actually see how much battery the case (and buds, just make the lights display the buds percentage whenever you put them back in). And they should definitely add a small SSD for downloading music.

It would be useful if they built iPod functionality into it (like the 6th generation iPod nano, which had the best design and functionality) + gave it Apple Music, but otherwise, it's a gimmick and you might as well just use your iPhone or gestures.

AirPods have the potential to become the new iPod, specially if given an improved Siri with a local LLM that can understand natural language and find music and give you info on the playing song. The iPod shuffle worked great without a screen and it didn't even have Siri. Note that HomePod doesnt need a screen.

There's a growing movement, specially and surprisingly in younger generations, to get less screen time (touch grass) and some of the teens in my family deliberately leave their phones at home and go "low-tech". The moment seems primed for a return of the iPod and having it built into AirPods seems like the right way to do it. No screen needed.

I'm here for it!!
Totally agree with you @ipedro

Is that technically accurate? It's not separate eSIMs connected to the same account (or even phone number) on the cellular provider's end?

It’s weird that MacRumors chose to talk about a “knock off” when companies have already brought perfectly legitimate products like this to market. This one for example:

And this one:

So Apple isn’t doing anything new or different with this and obviously a case with a screen IS useful since several companies are already successfully selling them.
