I am a year 1 digital film making student who is considering getting an imac, however I am concerned that the imac may not be able to support video formats or may not have the capacity for heavy video editing and capturing.

I used to use mac pro for that in school(before university), but it is not as cost friendly for my personal use, so I thought an Imac would suffice if it meets my requirements.

    Any advice?

    Thank you =)

Well i would say that an iMac is enough, i use mine for editing and there is no problem. It is actually perfect for independent film work. My brother has been editing high definition footage on his macbook pro which is weaker than my iMac. Just got FCP and you are sorted, but that software isn't exactly cheap if you are on a tight budget.

I'v never had any problems with video formats, what formats do you plan on using?
I would just suggest getting an external hard drive. Hard drive space is the only thing that becomes a problem.

I use the whole FCS suite on my iMac as well as Shake and Autodesk Combustion and they run brilliantly...

My work suite Mac Pro isn't the greatest, that said, but my 3.06 iMac is just brilliant for most things. I do use mainly SD footage but HD stuff works great too.

With student discount you can get the top iMac for £1,300 (you have to call them though) and then get your RAM from elsewhere like Crucial or something.

Just to let you know i went with the non-wireless keyboard and the LogicSkin Final Cut keyboard cover available on the Apple Store and I swear by it increasing my editing by at least 25% I know most of the shortcuts (the 1000's of them!) by heart but the colour scheme helps so much as I catch the colours out of the corner of my eye so think less about where i put my hands. I would highly recommend it to and video editor, shame they haven't done one for Motion yet!
