Bit generic topic, but here is a bit more specific information:

I use a computer for several things:

Encoding video
Server for video I watch on my TV through my Xbox 360
Internet browsing
Writing - LOTS of writing
Converting golden age comics
Light video editing
Presentation creation

I like to multitask (do a good bit of other stuff and want it to encode without hogging all the comps resources and slowing me down).

I had been doing all these things on a Pentium 4 3GHz. I have not been real satisfied with the computer for the last several on the as I have gotten into more HD video and this was a slow chore on the old girl.

As long as my computer can do what I want I am not concerned with the latest and greatest. My most demanding activity is the video encoding.

Currently I am using Vuze to watch videos on the Xbox 360 (it is faster easier than media player) Is anyone using the Mac version to do this?

Also I read some information about .avi files that sounded good.

I'd like simplicity, solid build quality, (I love the iMac Design), and reliability. I was rock solid for years with XP - Vista changed all that for the worse.

An iMac would probably be great for you.
You might want to wait a few weeks to purchase one, as Apple might be updating this product lines soon.
