its all up to what you think about it i guess.

the ipad is just convenient and could replace a laptop. just to what everyone is saying. :)

Depends on your lifestyle and workflow.

Think of these devices as components of a toolbox. The more tools, the more things you can do without having to compromise (compromise example=using a Crescent wrench as a hammer).

You don't use every tool all of the time, but when you need one for a specific task you appreciate having it.

Typical week for me in the office and home has me using the rMBP 50%, iPad Air 2 25% and the iPhone 6+ 25%.

When traveling abroad (I average 150K miles/year) this shifts quite a lot- 50% iPad, 30% iPhone 6+, 20% MBA.

None of the Apple tech is "necessary". I lived a large part of my life without any of it. I love the iPad, though, and at home I use it more than any of my other devices. It is really convenient to have while lounging and I prefer the larger screen (compared to the iPhone) for most activities.

I don't see an iPad replacing a laptop unless one is using the laptop as only a tablet. As for me, I only need my iPhone and iPad Air 2. Those fit my personal needs.

No. ipad cant replace a laptop.

it is just a toy for me. i mostly using my laptop or phone at home, then if need to do some work (/play/etc) I use my Note tablet because it has a pen and i need a pen to do work. i dont do any special with my ipad, it is just a toy - fun to play with when i want to play with it instead of android...

Arguably, laptops and smartphones aren't necessary. They provide convenient, mobile computing, but most people could get away with a standard dumbphone and a desktop if they really had to. I had to do it myself for a while when my MacBook Pro was stolen, and then weeks later, my iPhone. It was inconvenient, but I managed long enough to hold out for the newest versions of each before replacing them.

But just like a laptop and a smartphone: An iPad is a nice, really useful and convenient thing to have around. Without one, you'll manage, but for some people, it's worth every penny to buy and use one.
A laptop and desktop are the same thing.... Just size difference if your looking at one for pure email and etc. Laptops cost around the same and actually saves space.

It can depending on your needs. If all you do is Web browse and email it is a replacement

Not necessary but certainly enjoyable. I play games on my iPad and do a lot of live streaming for tennis and football games. Love watching multiple games on TV, iPad, and MBP. I seem to use them all pretty equitably.

However, MBP is the primary I use every morning for mail, internet, forum browsing, etc..

Mm, no, they're very different use cases. No one sells a 27 inch laptop (or even a 21 inch laptop, for that matter). Nor would I expect to pack my iMac in a convenient carrying case and bring around with me to use anywhere, without plugging into an outlet.

If you just want "pure email and etc," a smartphone could do that job, right?

But, not everyone uses their computers for just that. Likewise, different people have different optimal working conditions. In some cases maybe a laptop will do, but the larger screen real estate afforded only by a desktop would be better.

Higher-performing processors (that use more power) are also only available on desktops. Show me a laptop that matches the capabilities of a Mac Pro.

They are the same use.....they have a cpu, gpu either dedicated or integrated, a display, a keyboard and mouse. Size is preference but they do the same thing with the same OS. Size and portability is preferences but the only difference is screen size and is it in a case or a laptop case.

The average Joe who don't need an Intel i5 or i7 and dedicated gpu who only uses his or her laptop to read emails, read websites and that's it and want a big screen an iPad can work

Uhh, no. There are quite a few iMac models that have CPUs and GPUs that are different in configuration for their mobile counterparts and provide higher levels of performance.

Size is preference but they do the same thing with the same OS.

Preference is the whole point. One could do most of their computing on an iPad and never touch a laptop or desktop. One could also lug an iMac around and plug it in whenever they want to do anything.

One could also get used to hanging by their thumbs. But these might not be things every person wants to do, all of the time. This is where different use cases come from, and why different product lines exist. It's also why anyone touting the death of PCs, Mac laptops or desktops is spouting hot air.

You're oversimplifying it. By the same token, the average Joe shouldn't care whether the tablet they're working on is an iPad or a Surface Pro 3. Yet, its very clear that even average Joes do care what platform they use for even basic tasks, and sometimes that preference is for something other than a tablet.

Unless your video editing, playing 3D intensive games or severe multi tasking a $300 laptop will do just fine just as well as a 300 dollar desktop.

Necessary is a strong word, but I wouldn't want to have to get by without my iPad. It's my flexible e-reader, storing hundreds of books and technical documents, both in pdf and other formats. With it, I'm able to keep my personal library in my pocket.

Have a laptop and an old iphone. I heard about ipad long time ago but never cared for it b/c i had laptop and a phone. I had android phone then went to an iphone. I always thought an ipad was not necessary and expensive.

I then thought about it and said... hey this would be a great thing if i want to watch youtube or skype etc and dont want to be on my laptop. Most importantly, i could lye down on my bed and use it whether watching youtube or web browsing or skype. I of course could do this with my iphone but its really small screen. In a way i could do this with a laptop but very uncomfortable if im lying on the bed.

I would only use it for web browsing sites and youtube mainly. Would you say getting one is necessary or not so much? Also how many tabs should be the max i open on these? When im on laptop i have a ton of tabs opened. But for ipad i know its harder b/c im not doing this with a mouse and typing everything myself so i won't have that much windows open. Would u say ipad is necessary for me? I dont play any games or stuff like that though. I might watch some movies etc. I also know u cant really do extensive stuff in it so basically it would be like my using it for youtube.

Do not get the iPad, is super annoying and limited. I have my mac book pro and is the real things. I am just to lazy to sell the ipad, is the same as the iphone but bigger. Unless you have an specific application that runs on the iPad, do not even bother.

I have:
MacBook Pro 2011
iPhone 6
IPad mini 2 LTE

I feel that the iPad is the least necessary of all of them. It's not as powerful for serious computing as a laptop and not as portable as a phone, plus the whole phone calls thing. If I had to give up one of them then it would easily be the iPad. One can get by with just a laptop and a phone for almost everything but an iPad and iPhone only or macbook and iPad only are much more difficult. iPad is great for light browsing and General content consumption in an ultraportable form.

Trust me, an iPad is a much nicer experience than a laptop, for many things.

Yes, being able to kick back on the couch with an iPad is very nice. So is watching a movie on the iPad at night camping. Necessary? No. But the experience is such that I rarely touch my laptop except purely for work. And that is only because they won't give my iPad domain access. =)

There are so many cheap Android tablets out there...Such as LG, Samsung, Asus, Nook, and Amazon tablets can be less than 250.00 if you can go for 7inches screen. I like my new LG G Pad 7.0 with Kit Kat. :apple:

I've found that my iPad useage has decreased since I purchased my iPhone 6. I now find myself watching a lot of what I'd watch on my iPad on my iPhone or MacBook Pro. Plus, I have ATV, so I use that quite frequently as well. I'm probably going to sell my iPad Mini within the coming weeks, since it just sits on my night stand where I may use it once a week, if that.

It's definitely not necessary. But it all just depends on what you plan on using it for.

Is an iPad really necessary?

I thought the same thing... until I actually got an iPad. Tablets are a LOT faster/easier to use than a laptop. See if you can borrow a friend's tablet for few days - I virtually guarantee you'll get addicted fast.

It's certainly not necessary, but it is a handy device to own. I almost never use my laptop since I got one. That being said, since you already own an iPhone, the two work well together. Via iMessage, I can send or respond to most text messages on my pad, and if I want to, I can answer phone calls without ever touching my phone. Not that i ever do, but if I wanted to, I could.
As an Internet browser, it's my main device. And using my Apple TV, I can send any videos or pics to my television.
I rather enjoy it, but none of these devices are a necessity.
