Is anybody else doing this with your apple tv?

I use my PS3 to stream movies, mp3s, etc from my Netgear ReadyNAS NV+. I am considering getting an ATV so that I can use Airplay to mirror my iPhone wirelessly to my LCD but am waiting for ATV3 so hopefully it will have and A5 chip and will do 1080p. 🙂

And Jailbreaking seems to me like a more efficient route to go. I only need to do it once and then stream whatever I want, instead of spending hours converting. Is there any drawback on JB?

I JB'd a couple of my ATV1s initially...quickly reverted back.
Hated the fact that at every Apple software update to the ATVs, the JBs were broken.

I suppose thats one drawback!

Oops... I forgot that bit. I am not an iPhone user yet (will soon be) so I am not familiar with the whole JB thing.

File conversion is pretty easy with a relatively powerful machine nowadays. I guess I might not JB it then, I can do some batch converting overnight anyway.

One quick but important question:
Can I use a Windows PC running iTunes to serve as the "streaming server"? I have an MBA but no iMac or Mac Mini. The Windows (Win 7) PC has a larger HDD and more power to do the conversion.

Absolutely. As long as it can run the latest version of iTunes you will be fine.

Yes, I use a 2007 Windows Laptop.

Quick couple of questions;

I just bought a MBP and I am considering getting the Apple TV Box. Will I be able wirelessly send recorded movies / TV shows from the MBP to the APTV? If so can I also be working on the MBP in other applications like Word, internet, etc or is the computer committed while doing the movie thing?

Boy, I wish I was like you! I started ripping my CDs last year into MP3 format and then learned about FLAC and Apple lossless formats. That meant starting all over again, throwing out all the MP3s and once again ripping 35,000 songs into FLAC. Once in FLAC I also converted them into Apple Lossless so they would play in iTunes and on my iPhone.

I started in June on my DVD and TV show collections into MKV format and then encoding with HandBreak. Instead of watching a few to make sure everything was working OK I just converted everything. Well, the movies were OK, but all the TV shows had their menus ripped away by HandBreak. So now I am just wrapping up re-ripping my 100+ TV shows (with multiple years for some of the shows) into the ISO format so I can stil use the menus.

Never say you are almost done because you may just change your mind and start all over again....

Started using Mac the Ripper and ripped 200+ movies then decided to buy RipIt since it is better and works in Lion, so now I have to rip all 220 all over, but the other 500+ and all my CD's are using Apple's iTunes format so they are ok.

I am still keeping my CD's and I keep the Ripped RipIt version on another drive since I have an ATV, and ATV2, I encoded everything using ATV format in HB? Eventually I will start using the ATV2 standard format, but ATV one works really well and I do not seea loss in quality.

I Ripped the full disc, but when I encode, I choose not to keep the Menus and Special Features as it takes up too much space.

You can do all that, but the real charm is that you don't need to do it from the MBP - you can simply use the Apple TV to access the iTunes library on the MBP using the remote, or Apple's Remote app from your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.
