For several betas now (currently on b8) I've noticed my typing appears to be much worse on iOS26. But then I reverted to iOS 18 and suddenly my typing was better, and I realized that iOS26 appears to skip key presses, or has altered sensitivity, it wasn't me!

I've pinpointed that this only happens in the "old" keyboard (i.e. NOT the one which has "A" on the bottom left of the space bar) - so on most non Apple apps.

For example, if I type "Hey man, how's it going man", the last "n" in man will routinely just not work. Instead, it'll say "ma". It seems to happen most commonly with "n", and on the second time a word (e.g. "man") is in a sentence. It's almost as if the autocorrect goes into processing mode, and stops my keypress.

I'm typing worse since years. Don't know what happened and when exactly it happened, but at some point writing got quite a bit worse for me.
Hehe, I meant since iOS26. I feel as if on the "old" keyboard on iOS26 I have to press harder for the key to register... very strange.

Initially on B3 when I first installed iOS 26 on my 14PM, typing was shocking. By around B6 things were back to ‘normal’ and no issues. I’d almost say that autocorrect is now working better than it was on iOS 18 but that could just be my mind after the terrible run on those first few betas.

In my case it aligned with a new iOS release, 17 would be my guess. My theory has been that Apple changed something about the way the keyboard guesses which "key" the user intended to tap, and my way of typing worked better with the previous logic.

Haven't tried iOS 26 so can't say if it's going fix the issue (for me) or make it worse.

This. I can't place it exactly either, but jesus christ it's been so much worse since that change.

Many years ago, i'm talking like iPhone4 days, i used to be able to type really fast in text messages, but as the new devices came out I noticed that it was hard to type as accurately anymore. Either i'm getting older or Apple has implemented some sort of compensation for when your right on the edge of a key, it tries to predict what you actually wanted to press, and then presses the nearest key instead. That is my guess anyway.. Auto-correct also doesn't help either!

They adjusted the keyboard keys spacing. It's not much but it's enough to screw up the muscle memory. Biggest one for me is typing and finding I now have a period between.every.single.word. Or as I am trying to type 9, I hit backspace and delete it instead. Those are my two biggest issues.

I won't mention how terrible auto correct is. Taking a correct word and changing it to something that makes 0 sense.

I’ve felt this as well… Was thinking I was tripping or losing my mind. For a while I turned off auto correct altogether and forced me to slow down and improve actual typing manually. I don’t think any of us are as precise as we think because auto correct has, for a long time, been doing most of the work. Now they’ve likely changed something and it’s exposing us.. That’s how it feels.

I temporarily went back to an SE 2 last year and on default settings, I was able to type much better despite around four years now of Pro Max size phones.

Seems to me that was because you have the same word (noun) in the sentence.

I was trying to type "Tree wasap" and no matter what I did "wasp" replaced that
in pages, finder, iPad and another program as I needed to cap SAP.
perhaps this is AI? or just  being stubborn with concrete grammar again.

as a writer I fear AI deeply and try my best to circumvent non-creativity tactics computers offer since last century
which feels like a fast moving wall towards my creativity every annual upgrade.

I should clarify it isn't replacing the word - it's negating to accept the key. It doesn't even give the usual feedback on the key (i.e. where it shows larger to show you've pressed it). It only occurs in the "old" keyboard, and it seems to me to be something to do with how it handles processing. I suspect it's "processing" some kind of AI **** that in effect delays the keyboard working for a 1/2 second.

Oh, I get that every page as I type, as I cannot type "does not" as older software changed that
as today's Pages won't. "doe snot" can get me fired especially if I type that the lead hero "drink after 5PM except when he
doe snot run down the road....."
that could be my rushing or never had the basic typing skills
but I do admit some keyboards will hinder my typing as that is getting worse by the month, sadly!

Actually, my typing has been worse since 17, both iPad and iPhone. I’ve written a post about it before here somewhere. There’s a slight lag in recognising my touch and it often displays the wrong word.

My typing used to be pretty good but now it’s horrible. It does seem like a spacing issue. And AutoCorrect certainly doesn’t help because it’s completely crazy.

The "spacing" issue is exasperated by the fact iOS26 appears to be using two different keyboards, each with different spacing and behavior. In official apps, Spotlight etc, there is a "new" keyboard, and third-party apps use another. Kind of crazy.

well.....im thinking about retiring from writing since im embarrassed over type mistakes instead of creativity.
im tired of time consuming corrections on a paragraph that takes way more time typing the dammed story.
sure enough my guru publisher expert confirmed others are facing the same dilemma.
he recommend I stop using the newer MacBooks, Logitech keyboards and finish on a MacBook Pro 2012.
since these new keyboards are not the same as the one we used 20 years ago.
that model mentioned still had the forgiveness of typos. as I just typed they sentence perfectly on my M1 mini,

to sum up the theme in this thread, perhaps if ya s l o w d o w n y o u k e y s t r o o k e as well I was recommended to do.

I know we are worried..... concerned, but just alter a tad and perhaps you can type better in this Ai world.

I've really never accustomed to the touch keyboard. Swiping saves me somewhat, otherwise my typing speed on these is no better than those T9 keyboards!!
Oh man you are old! Most people don’t know what that is!
I miss my t-9 on my Nokia 6310… Wait. I am old! Damn!

I don't know if my typing is worse yet but I’ve noticed that on my iphone in the safari search bar when i type a web site address the text is really small and it wasn’t like that on 18.6. Happened only after I upgraded to ios26
