I'm in the market to get a new AppleTV and popped over to the forums to see what people are saying and I'm seeing a LOT of people that are disappointed with it. I was wondering if it's a vocal minority and most people are ok with the new box or if it really is an issue and I should get a 2021 model and just accept that I'm buying an older machine...

Happy enough with mine, for the most part it’s no different than the ATV4K 1st gen model I was using previously.
The only main difference is I’ve now got HDR10+ for some of my movie library, HDR now works on YouTube and the remotes a little bit different.
Apart from the garbled text issue on Up Next in the tv app i’ve not had any of the other issues I’ve seen others post about.

Yes, it's slightly more fluid than the last version and it cost a fraction of the prices of slightly faster other stuff from Apple. I gave away my oldest AppleTV model, moved the main one to a spare TV and now the newest AppleTV takes on the role of main TV AppleTV. All is good.

Relative to the prior version, it's only a little faster and only has a few more features that may or may not matter to a buyer.

On the other hand, it's not very often that anyone can buy an entire, "latest & greatest" Apple technology anything for $150 or less. AppleTVs are usually good for about 5+ years before they bump into risk of tvOS update making them obsolete. If that's the case with this one, that's only $30/yr for the "pricey" one.

Happy with mine. Although the remote just flat out stopped working a few days ago. I tried several steps to reset it with no luck. Ultimately I was able to re-pair it with the < and Vol + button.

Other than that anomaly, it's been fine and I've had every variation of the Apple TV going back 10 years.

My remote has 2 sticking buttons, which seems to be a problem multiple users are reporting.

tvOS 16 is buggy, but that affects all of the models…

The hardware seems okay, though not much more than the typical Apple spec bump as far as an upgrade goes.

Im not so happy. The intern 4k upscaling from Apple TV 4k 2022 is not as good as the upscaling from my TV LG C2. Ists the same how in the Apple tV 4k 2021. There is also not a outomatic Resolution matching. For this reason i set the output only to 1080p when y stream 1080p content form my TV App. When y stream 4k i change output to 4k. Whit this manuell setting i have the better picture with LG C2. The upscaling to 4k on the Apple TV 4k ist good. Yes. But not very good. But also the Apple TV 2021 upscaling was good. Newer very good Tvs ( SonY A95k etc>) have the better upscaling than Apple TV 4k 2022. When you stram with Apple TV 4k and want the upscaling from your tv you must set the outpout to that what you stream. When i stream 1080p 50hz it set the output to 1080p 50hz. Then the 1080p singal goes go the tv and the tv makes the upscaling.

This is a good point. The good thing is the A15 has a neural engine, and using deep CNNs for enlarging images (i.e upscaling) is borderline commodity these days.

So, it should be really low hanging fruit for apple to solve (pun intended)

Working great. Only issue is that new PS5 controller seemed to have issue with paddle getting 'stuck' after a couple of minutes, and crashing my expensive racing car (no, ATV wasn't getting hot). Older Nimbus controller is fine. But I haven't tried a different game yet so it could an app issue rather than ATV issue.

Both controllers work perfectly on the our other ATV, of the previous generation with the same game.

Very unhappy. Compared to the 2021 is a crappy model. The remote issue mentioned above continues after updates I finally got Apple to replacement of the unit. Also the ethernet model I got has issues with 1 GB speed - often it caps it to 100. Not the cable or router - same place the 2021 works fine. I removed the 2022 and went back to the 2021 I have the replacement 2022 hardware - remote and TV - but will keep the 2021 until I see reports they fixed the remote unsyncing issues

Is there a SpeedTest app on the TV app store? How did you measure your speeds?

I like mine, haven’t had any problems with it or the remote. My remote is never very far away from the box, the box isn’t very near to my router (but also not very far anway) and almost always line of sight - no problems. I like the remote, I find it much easier to use than the old one that came with the HDR model. I’m only using it with a WiFi router, though I bought the Ethernet version so I could connect it directly if/when I relocate the cable and router. OTOH, I only use it for streaming, no gaming.

I hate the inconsistency in the functionality between ATV apps. Youtube, Movies, Netflix, Prime,... they all like to have their one ways to navigate and choose preferences in language, subtitles, etc.. As I am using the old *TERRIBLE* touch remote control this is a growing pain in the donkey. Looking for a *BETTER* replacement RC. Any considerations? And yes, I miss an optical/digital coax sound output as well.
