Don't quote me here, but I BELIEVE your text messages are saved to the iCloud if you have DOCUMENTS AND DATA enabled.

I did a fresh install with iOS 7, no restoring anything but iCloud settings, but when I was all said and done (never restored my local backup) my text up to the previous nights sync WERE there.

Just make sure that you've sync'd and gotten no new content before you install. You can always push a new sync before loading 7.

I've never had my text messages restore when setting up as new.

Do you use messages on a mac maybe and they are syncing back to your phone?

I want to update my iPhone 4 from iOS7 beta 6 to final release and then restore backup from iTunes

But im afraid my backup contain some beta bug since i've done backup on beta software, many of macrumors member told me to not restore from backup instead start a fresh install

Backup what you want, install iOS 7, restore items you backed up.

I started fresh with beta 5/6 for the same reasons as the OP (freed up around 20 GB's of space), but performed a restore to GM (and restored from my beta 6 backup). No problems so far. It's nice to clean up the clutter.

No fresh install for me. I always restore from backup because of saved game data.

Starting fresh here. Always like to do that with a new version of iOS. Will be doing the same thing with Mavericks next month.

I setup as new hundreds of times per year so doing so on my personal daily driver is a no-brainer.

* Bonus, your Messages are probably occupying several GBs over the year.

Nope. iMessage is disabled on my Macbook Pro.

I've only had it happen when I restored from a backup in the past. I don't know how it got on this time, but I do admit it's the first time in a long while I've done fresh (last was 6.1 I think).

Question: how exactly do you restore directly to iOS 7 from iOS 6?

Once iOS 7 is released the "Restore" option in iTunes will grab iOS 7 instead of 6.1.4.

SHOOT. You know what? I take it back. I didn't fresh install this time. I loaded GM from my Macbook and let it restore my 6.1.4 backup to see how it went.

It just now hit me. I had loaded the last Beta from fresh, and all subsequent, and even started to load 7 GM fresh but then I decided to do a backup restore from the one that I just made to see.

SORRY! Non-usual way for me to go about installations so it slipped past me.

Whenever I get around to iOS 7, I will do a fresh install and I usually do with ANY iOS release. I think I did one update OTA on iOS 6. Heheh

I don't know if I would do it with every iOS incremental update given the data I like to have on my phone. I think a major update seems like a good time to start from scratch though.

Yeah, I'm weird, I'll admit. I just don't care about game data, and don't mind logging into apps again. Major iOS release is definitely a great time for a fresh start for everyone else!

Oh I always start fresh when a new iOS X.0 is released! First backing up my current phone and pictures, and NOT restoring it after the new iOS is installed.

But this time around I'll be upgrading to a 5S, so it'll start bare with iOS 7. Easy.

Maybe the pros can help here. I have a iCloud backup and only have done ota installs. So for ios 7 tomorrow I'd like to be as fresh as possible. I do have game saves In ICloud I want back. So would I
Install ios 7
Use settings and erase content
Setup as new device then restore via iCloud backup

Or should I use pc and go through dfu?

Does anyone know a better method

A good friend of mine is. I'll be watching to see how he likes it. He, like I, has chosen to keep his like new iPhone 5. Neither of us suffers from scratches and have kept our phones looking like new. So far they're the best of the various iPhones we've had.

it makes no difference starting fresh vs backup.

i ran into problems with both in years past and have had success with both methods.

i wouldnt advise going from beta backup to public release but thats just me

I'm not trolling this thread when I say I'm going to stick with my update from iOS 6. This may be the first time I've done that but I've been running for a week with no issues. However, I am keeping an eye on the common problems that come up when upgrading to a major release. A zillion people will update tomorrow and I'll be there with the unwashed masses. :D

I haven't used any betas.

If I restore to ios 6 now and then update to ios 7 tomorrow is that the same as restoring to ios 7?

Why bother unless I encounter issues? Have never had to do so the past 4 years I've had idevices. If something comes up regarding battery functionality, etc, then do a fresh install. Otherwise, I see no point.
