Sure, it can be resolved. Just tell me how many years you expect Apple to provide security updates from the date they sell you a product. My answer is Five.

Unfortunately, it can't be resolved by my answer -- that would be like the blind leading the blind. None of our guesses matter. For a slightly better response, I'd point back to my first response in this thread.

OP makes an assumption not based on any fact, then draws a conclusion from it, and doesn't like the conclusion and makes an argument what he assumed leads to what he dislikes. "Unencumbered by the thought process" as the Car guys might say! [Nothing personal, many of us go through moments like those on occasion.]
 
I based it on the fact of what apple has done in the past. When leopard came out, no more anything for panther was released even quicktime and itunes was made only for tiger after that. and when tiger came out safari wasnt even updated for panther only tiger. so if we look at the past here, itunes, QT, and whatever will probably only be available for post leopard.

What if apple switched to AMD
I would like that, ya they are the same architecture , but ive had alot better luck, and have seen things run better on AMD than intel.

the ps3 is still technically a "G5" cpu. the gamecube if modified version of the G3 btw 🙂
 
PS3 is a dual core PowerPC CPU with 7 cell cores attached. The cell cores are very specialised little processing untis.

The XBox360 is a standard tripple core PowerPC.

As I recall from the book "The Race for a New Game Machine," the Xbox 360 chip is triple core, and each core can run two threads. 6 threads total.

The PS3 is a single core that can run two thread (at best), and it might just be single-core, single thread. Sony went with the 7 SPE's (cells?) for power instead of multiple PPCs like Microsoft, although it turns out their chips were being designed by the same people, at the same time, and are almost the same core (on the PPC end.)

The tradeoff on these PPC cores was that they do not do out of order execution. This is partially what bugged out Apple (besides the laptop factor).

If Wikipedia is trustworthy (a big IF!!), then it is actually closer to a G4. While your statement is mostly correct, Wikipedia states that 50 SIMD instructions were added 'geared toward 3D graphics.' Since 'G4' was a fancy way of saying 'AltiVec,' this would make the Gekko closer to a G4 than a G3, esp. since G3/G4/G5 are merely Apple branding names, and not a specific chip anyway.

I was recently looking through some software that I payed quite a bit for, not too long ago...
But on the other hand, OS X is moving forward nicely.

It still feels wrong that my MBP can run Windows apps in a VM faster than Mac PowerPC apps.

And even more so that this Mac can't run OS9 apps at all, but can boot up into Windows and run just about any Windows app.

...just pondering that, I think a kitten just died..

Have you tried COI? I tried it, it works brilliantly, but I had no luck getting any applications to work. It give the ol' translation error. You should check it out though.

My understanding is that the 'eighth' SPE is a spare; it is there in case one of the other 7 'real' SPEs is defective. But if that isn't the case, then what is the purpose of an eighth SPE that isn't accessible?

Half of the Macs on sale now still have nothing on the Quad G5.

Few people appreciate the speed improvements in the 970MP over the 970FX, as well as the fact that 2.5Ghz is still 2.5Ghz. Plus 2.5Ghz of PPC instructions is generally more productive than 2.5Ghz of x86 instructions(Steve Jobs said it, so it is truer than true!). Until the core counts really start rising, and multi-threading can get much use above 2 threads, 2005 is 2009.

Intel understood this, hence the rapid abandonment of the Pentium name, with a focus on what Ghz, and a switch to the 'Core' series of names, with made up model numbers and little mention of Ghz.

Matter of fact, you can still buy affordable systems built with 970MP for $1,250 base:

Chip yield is the percentage of chips you produce which come out with a low enough number of defects at operating temperature/voltage that they are actually sellable.

In this wikipedia case, it refers to the 'eighth' SPE, which is like a spare-tire. Technically, you can say that every car has five wheels, but the purpose of the fifth is to replace one of the four 'real' wheels. Same here. If one of the eight SPEs comes out defective, it is simply not used, and you are left with seven. But even if all eight work, you can't have some chips with seven, and some with eight, so one has to be disabled anyway. Having a spare tire/SPE increases yield, because you can withstand more defects without losing the whole chip. In olden times, the 486SX was believed to be a regular 486 that had a defective FPU. Likewise, a Core Solo could have been a Core Duo with a bad core.(Don't know if that is true.)

Interesting though that there is ALSO one of those 7 SPE dedicated to the OS. I wonder if that is a hardware limitation or an implementation issue of PS3 OS? I suppose the SPEs are so specialized and constrained in memory access rules, that there has to be one set aside to run the OS and communicate new tasks to the other SPEs.

Does Apple support all previous versions of their OS, or do they have a cut-off date as does Microsoft? Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think they have such a site. Basically, only 10.4 and 10.5 are receiving updates, and according to Apple custom, 10.4 will lose security updates when 10.6 is released, in a couple months.

Intel are years ahead of AMD.

Just because an OS is not supported doesn't mean that it'll suddenly become unusable. 10.4.11 is a pretty damn solid build of a nearly 4 year old operating system. It'll continue to run just fine. The lack of security updates isn't really a problem until people actually start making Mac viruses which hasn't happened yet...

You may miss out on the latest and greatest software but that's just the way with technology. However, it might be the case that Apple will continue to support iTunes for Tiger as the iPod and iPhone business is so massive for them that it would be pretty silly to lock out a fairly large portion of Mac owners.

We'll just have to wait and see...

Apple will discover that a large population of unsupported systems provides great bait to those bad people, and while they are at it, they'll be targeting 10.5 and 10.6 as well.

Microsoft learned that security is a collective problem and that is why they made sure security updates work even on pirated copies of Windows.

exactly. im using windows 2000:apple: right now, I find it a lot more stable than really anything else that MS have released.

Intel are years ahead of AMD.

That i have to disagree with. call this opinion but, I have an amd athlon xp at 1.67ghz, and it runs faster than any 2.xghz singlecore intel cpu that ive ever used.

Of course I'm talking about current chips. Everyone knows Pentium 4s were awfully designed and went only for clock speed...

Nothing AMD has come close to Intel's i7s.
