Is Apple gunning for Android users now?

That feature might only be on Nexus devices. I'm not seeing it on my Note 3.

that may be a stock android dialer feature, I'm not sure (because I'm on stock)

The dialer will also search google for unknown phone numbers in an attempt to ID them if results are available. Works for incoming calls from businesses.

You guys might be right. I have Cyanogen Mod and Google Dialer. My apologies if I have caused confusions.

I believe you can download the Google Dialer, no? Or does it come with Google Search??

I noticed something different with Apple with this iPhone 6 launch, beginning with the keynote. They seemed to backdown on the Android bashing and seemed to really emphasize how much bigger the new iPhones are. But...they also did something different....they released a guide on how to switch from Android to iOS.

Sure, Apple has always been in competition with Android, but now it seems like instead of expanding iOS to completely new smartphone users, it seems like they are doing a lot to make iOS more open with more choices. Even iMessage has the ability now to text non-Apple people in iOS 8.Let's not forget about extensions and keyboards.

Do you guys think this is happening and do you think they will be successful? I was standing in line with a friend for the iPhone 6, and a lot of people in line were upgrading from larger Android phones like the Note 3. Not that I'm saying this is typical, but there were a lot.

Before Apple seemed to not care about Android users, now they do. Well I know I'm definitely switching. 😎

To answer your question YES Apple is gunning for Android users. Samsung is gunning for iPhone users, all of the other phone developers are gunning for Apple and Samsung users. It is all about the money, regardless of what kind of drivel they sell to us in commercials about "user experience" blah blah blah.

I believe you can download the Google Dialer, no? Or does it come with Google Search??

Sadly, I think the dialer is part of the 'skin' and there is no app on the play store for replacement (like you can with a messaging app)

In order to change dialers, I think you need root (and you'd have to revert the changes in order to accept an OTA update and all that jazz )

I still think the biggest advantage Apple has over Android is messaging and group messaging. iMessage allows for uncompressed pictures to be sent and the default Messages app handles all types of files, even gifs, and compresses them to be able to be sent over the network.

I have yet to find a texting app on Android that does all this effectively and consistently. If I could have found one I would have never given up my Nexus 5.

The stock android messaging app does this, well at least on my Note 3 I'm not sure if it's android or touchwiz. I can take a large video and it will reduce the size for me. I'm not sure if my pics are sent uncompressed or not though, I'll let someone else chime in, this is incredibly useful and would be a great advantage.

My biggest complaint is Hangouts, which is where Google should put their muscle into. You can't send more than one picture at a time, and it will not compress video only refuse to send it. Great potential, crappy implementation.

i believe whatsapp does all of those things. feel the need to mention iphone still compresses pics over mms, it is imessage specifically that keeps it uncompressed (which is why I'm suggesting an imessage alternative, rather than mms client, not fair to compare the two as equals 🙂).

yes i agree ios generally has messaging advantage due to imessage coming automatically installed and being associated with phone number (unlike hangouts) with its smart switching between sms/imessage

I was not aware the stock messaging app on Touchwiz did that. Thank you for letting me know.

My point was that the stock messaging app on my Nexus 5 didn't do that. I understand I can install WhatsApp, but then I also have to get my friends to install it. I think it is fair to compare the default messaging apps as equals and say iOS' version is much better. I understand that iPhone will effectively compress pictures via text message. The stock Android app and Hangouts won't do that for .gif files.
