Hi gurus,

I bought an iPad 3 on release day while I was in New York and I was offered and purchased AppleCare Plus at the same time.

I did mention to the Apple chap that I lived in the UK and asked if everything (including damage) was still covered and he assured me it was and that it was just subject to a £50 excess (or a deductible as I believe it's called in the US).

Anyway, I've managed to drop it and damage the corner and I'm contemplating getting it replaced at my local Apple store, here in the UK.

Having had a nose around, it appears that AC+ is not available in the UK and I'm a bit concerned I may have been sold a dummy with the Apple guy just trying to earn his commission, knowing that I would soon be 5000 miles away.

Anyone have any knowledge/experience here?

Cheers.

Applecare+, like normal Applecare for the iPad, is NOT worldwide. Sample from the US Terms and Conditions:

11. General Terms
...
(iv) This Plan is offered and valid only in the fifty states of the United States of America and the District of Columbia and all provinces and territories of Canada. This Plan is not offered to persons who have not reached the age of majority. This Plan may not be available in all states of the United States and in all provinces and territories of Canada, and is not available where prohibited by law.

Applecare for iPads and iPhones has very different geographic limitations compared to Applecare for Macs.

I get the feeling I've been duped. :(

Normal Apple warranty is definitely worldwide for all of their "Mobile" devices (including laptops), so I can get my NYC purchased iPad repaired/replaced at an Apple store in the UK, but it appears I've been had over the Plus part.

Out of interest, can you buy "normal" (non Plus) AppleCare for iPad in the US, or is it all Plus now?

Cheers for the reply too. :)

Normal Applecare was never worldwide for the iPad:

Looks like you can only get Applecare+ from the Apple Store, although you might be able to get it (normal Applecare) elsewhere.

I'll try and find the link, but there's a page where apple say their warranty is worldwide for "mobile" devices (e.g not iMacs for example), but that may just be for the standard 1st year warranty and not AppleCare/Plus.

Normal AppleCare has always been worldwide for the iPad. Only iPhone AppleCare had some limitations. Current AppleCare is worldwide, unlike AppleCare+ offered in the US.

Err, the evidence suggests exactly the opposite. You're welcome to believe whatever you want, though.

What evidence? He is linking to EULA of the new AppleCare+. iPad has been available in Germany from the beginning and AppleCare sold here has always been worldwide.

AppleCare + is only available in USA and Canada but you can call apple if you bought in the USA and they can ship you a replacement I believe.

No it hasn't. At least read the Terms and Conditions for your own region before you say something completely incorrect.

11. General Terms
...
(iv) This Plan is offered and valid only if you are a resident of a country in which Apple or its affiliated companies offers the Plan that are set forth here: http://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/emeaipadcountrylist.html. This Plan is not offered to persons who have not reached the age of majority. This Plan may not be available in all states or provinces, and is not available where prohibited by law.

The countries on the list are:

Austria
Belgium
Denmark
Finland
France (including Corsica and excluding overseas departments and territories)
Germany
Ireland
Italy
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Norway
Portugal
Spain (including Balearic Islands but excluding Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla)
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom

I'm no expert, but those countries all appear to be in Europe. Thus your German Applecare for iPad is not valid in countries such as the United States. Applecare for iPad is not, and has never been, worldwide like it is for Macs.

I bought the iPad 3 and the AC+ on March 16th from the Apple store on W16th in NYC.

Are you suggesting I ring Apple in the US (and if so who in particular)?

Call apple in the USA and either go thru a tech support or sales, regardless they will lead you to the right case dept.

***Update***

So I checked in for my appointment at the Apple store, chap looked at my iPad and said it would be £249.

I told him I had AC+, but he just looked at me all confused! :D

Anyway, he went away and came back 5 minutes later with a brand new (yes-BRAND SPANKING NEW!) iPad and that was that, no charge, no aggro, no nothing.

Excellent, congrats! It looks like AppleCare+ bought in the states is honored internationally, as in the UK. But one does have to be persistent as the sales folks there haven't a clue about it and may need to be reminded.
