When I bought my iMac I decided not to get the Apple care at first. I figured I would wait a year and see how things go. Well when my 1 year of support was almost up I decided to go ahead and get it. 3 months later the display croaked on my iMac. So I took it in and the estimate to fix it was $700.00. Man was I glad I bought Apple Care just in time. My total cost with Apple Care $0.00.

Yes it is a lot of money but you just never know when something can go wrong. Would you rather spend $250.00 now or $700.00 later? I know not all repairs will cost this much but it is one real world example.

I will always be buying Apple Care in the future. In fact I just bought a 13" MBP 2010 Refurb for my wife and I bought the Apple Care right away. I'm happy knowing we will have peace of mind for 3 years. It is one less cost I have to worry about sneaking up on me when I least expect it.

Yes, sure, because the ACP price tag for iMac and MBP 13" 2010 is much lower than that of MBP 15" and 17". Check the Apple Store.

I think it is worth it. In 2008, Apple replaced my Macbook Pro because of display problems. I also had a logic board replaced on an earlier system. I would buy AppleCare from LA Computer because it is much cheaper. If you buy it on Ebay, make sure you have the full box and not just the code.

Yeah but is it $700.00? I didn't think so. The price is higher because the parts cost more on the 15" and 17" MBP. If Apple were to fix your MBP it would cost them more to fix one that cost $2000.00 compared to the cost to fix one that cost $1200.00.

I teach at a college and a few of my students have had issues with their MBP's and they were all very glad they had the Apple Care.

But again if you want to take the chance go ahead. Chances are you will be fine.

I just called my insurance company and they are covering my laptop from top to bottom for $40/yr. This includes accidents/theft/spills etc. No deductible. I have state farm.

In the 10 years of been using Macs, I've never bought AppleCare. Luckily for me, the only problems I had were battery and hard drive related.

But I've seen the benefits of AppleCare, and it's nice. My friend had the old plastic Macbook, the one with the common defect of plastic chipping off on the front edge, and Apple took it in, replaced the entire inside plastic cover. Looked brand new.

It all depends on whether you want to take a risk or not. I personally prefer taking the risk and spending the $300 elsewhere. Especially now, with how well built Macs are.

Always.

My wife and I each have now-out-of-apple-care MBPs, which is one reason we're in the market for new machines...

Repairs under Apple Care:

Hers:
Logic Board at 2 years
Defective Battery at 2.5 years
Power supply cable at 1.5 years

Mine:
Optical drive at 2 years
Defective battery at 2.5 years

We also had a G5 Tower at the office that kept having I/O issues after a couple of years. They replaced the hard drive, then the logic board, then god knows what else, and the thing still kept having issues. They gave us a new Mac Pro to replace it.

Apple Care Always.

whether you need it or not is a matter of taste, or better said do you want to spend even more money. applecare for sure has its eligibility.
its NOT just waranty its a support package, where you have 3 years of worldwide waranty plus three years software support for mac os and ilife and iwork. awardwinning support by the way, with 95% satisfied customers. moreover accessories like time capsule, airports and cinema display (CD has to be bought on the same day) are assured as well. with imac applecare you additionally get pickup service.
i'm not sure but i think there is almost NO repair on a mac, which cost less than applecare. f. e. switching the keyboard on a macbook pro is about 330 euro...
regards

I buy it for piece of mind...I do not buy extended warranty on cars but on my Macs i do.

My iMac had a harddrive replaced, and my MacBook had a superdrive replaced...all I did was walk into the store show them my problem and picked it up two days later...To me it is one of the biggest benefits of Apple products, if I had an HP where do I go?

I bought my new MBP at BestBuy (price matched student disc and have 18 month no interest financing) and will be buying AppleCare using the student discount before my year is up.

I always buy applecare, its been great to me

On my 07 mbp, i had 3 battery replacements. including one after 2.5 years.
My 07 mbp was replaced for free with a 2010 15 in Hires antiglare model after several other major failures.

my fiancee had her 2008 white macbook replaced this weekend with the new 2011 15 in. macbook pro (she needed both ports on the optical audio input/output and only 15 in model had that)

Insurance isn't a warranty. It won't pay for a repair if the video adapter goes bad, the processor overheats, or the battery suddenly gives up.

Yeah I know that. I was responding to the guy who said that no one would offer a warranty that would cover dropping/theft/damage and I simply stated that State Farm covers me for that.

I'm on my 8th mac, soon to be 9th and I've never had applecare up until the machine I'm currently using, 2.4ghz C2D unibody. This machine has had the screen replaced, the super drive replaced twice, battery, and charger replaced all in the last 2.5 years at no cost to me. When the trackpad started to malfunction I called Apple Customer Relations and they offered to replace the machine with a new (now old i5 15inch). This was a few days before the new ones were announced, after the new models were announced I called back and asked if I could be upgraded to the new 15inch model and they obliged.

I will always get applecare from here on out. Necessary? Only if you don't like spending tons of money getting your laptop fixed or repaired if something happens to go wrong with it after the 1 year warranty is up.

Yeah I agr....wait what?

I like to consider myself experienced. I'm not an AASP and, as far as I know, I can't call up Apple or login to GSX after my warranty expires and order up parts on the cheap.

a replacement logic board will cost an end user $1200-$1500, regardless of experience.

why would you need a new logic board? apple warranty doesn't cover water damage...

I got a new 27" cinema display and got the 3 year warranty for just 100$.
used my staff univ discount.
cant beat that for assurance esp if you pay more than 1k for anything
usually my rule of thumb

lolwut? Water damage???? When did I say anything about water damage?

You've never heard of screens/logic boards/hard drives/video cards/cd drives/airport cards etc dying without rhyme or reason?

Accidental damage isn't the only way that a machine can go awry.
