Worth it after the first year. I wouldn't bother buying it at the time of purchase unless you are forgetful and might forget to buy it when you're 1st year is coming to a close. You never know what will happen in that first year, you may decide you don't want it any more or that you want to upgrade etc. And it gives you no added value during that first year so I never have seen the point of it.

If you decide to get AppleCare (I did), check out the prices on Amazon. Their deals on AppleCare are good, and won't subject you to the risk of scams as eBay might.

Definitely worth it to buy AppleCare, sometimes they replace your computer with a brand new version of a similarly priced model to you if its beyond repair. That just happened to my friend's macbook pro (about 2 years old), she had the older style one and there was something wrong with the wireless card and it took the technicians at the Apple store over 3 weeks (back and forth) and still didn't solve the problem, she then escalated the problem to Apple Canada and they simply offered to send her a brand new current generation Macbook Pro, so she's set and won't be needing a new laptop for the next few years. I also know someone that had a problem with her previous generation 20" iMac (something about the power supply) and they ended up replacing it with a new 21" iMac because it couldn't be fixed or something.

A) Applecare is refundable based on a daily rate times the number of days left on the agreement (full refund if no time used).

B) Apple machines come with 90 days of complimentary technical support via phone which is seperate from the "hey my computer Is messed up, please send me a box" phone support. Registering AppleCare at 90 days give you the full 3 years of service.

Yes it is very much so.
I have a first generation macbook(1.83Ghz core duo aka the cheapest available laptop from Apple at the time. Bought it July 06). Almost 6 months after I bought it my battery went out with some really odd problem and casing were turned yellow(Known issue). Apple replaced both of them with no charge the warranty covered it but the cost of not having one would have been like $500(that day I bough the extended warranty). Then I got it back a week later, and a few days after I got it back cd got stuck in my slot loading drive(I have a feeling that the when they casing didn't something). I didn't see my macbook for about a month, after I took it in. I am not sure if they could figure out the problem, but it got shipped back, the receipt showed that they changed the logic board, dvd drive, the cpu, pretty much almost every major piece of hardware in the computer, once again no charge. They pretty much gave me a brand new computer, and I didn't have any major problems since. Also I took it in one more time before my warranty was up with a buzzing speaking, they fixed that and replaced the top casing(cracked a bit, my fault I take it to school and Im not nice to my macbook, even though I love it). Once again no charge, the apple care was well worth the money for me. I think Apple lost money on me with my macbook, but they gained a customer for life(or for the foreseeable future). The one reason I recommend mac is just how well they stand by there product. Yes I know it sounds like I had major problems, but it was the first generation of macbook's and I expected it. At the same I am become very attached to my mac as a result, we went through hell and back haha. Basically I recommend it greatly by experience.

Another vote for apple care...you should surely buy it...but you have one year to buy it after you purchase your mac and don't need it immediately...so you can wait...but do buy it...

Yes its definitely worth it. I personally got Applecare for piece of mind. If something should go wrong with my uMBP i know that i can call up Apple and they can help me resolve my issues.

in my opinion, having that telephone support when you need it is enough reason to buy Applecare.

Absolutely.

And not just for the repair situations. You get 3 years of HOW-DO-I-DO-THIS tech support for OS X Software! "How do I set up a network?" "How do I migrate from PC to a Mac"? and a million other things that you might not quite understand even with the internet and all of its resources. The technician is there to help you with your OS problems.

Gold.

Very much worth it, it's not so much that you think it will break in 3 years, but it will help safeguard just in case something does end up happening.

You get 1 year immediately after purchase free, but if you want those extra 2 years you have to buy it before you owned the computer 1 calender year.

Applecare is usually tied with your Mac, so you can't transfer it to another.

Just to remind you though, accidental damage is not covered.

i've also noticed that in Apple stores they are much more willing to provide repairs if you have applecare.

Wow, thanks everyone. The answer seems to be pretty overwhelmingly yes. I'm purchasing this week. Just one more question: I have a few hundred dollars worth of Best Buy giftcards from Christmases and birthdays. Considering I can purchase Applecare from other retailers, is there any reason I can't buy an MBP from Best Buy, get Applecare somewhere else, and be entirely happy?

No problems... and you can wait buying AC until near the end of year one. But IF you have problems earlier than that customers that have AC gets first in line to get it fixed. AC = VIP

I got my MBP from BestBuy and actually went with their own Black Tie ccoverage over the applecare. One reason is that BB will cover 1 battery replacement for free and the accidental "Whoops I spilled coffee into my laptop so I get the current model equivalent as the replacement."
