Is AT&T Next worth it?

Not on my plan with Verizon :) I'm on the single line plan for $60 going month to month. When they iPhone is released I'll sign up for a 2 year deal and my plan won't change. Verizon offers the best deal among the big boy carriers on single line plans.

Wait. Is this a thing? That's a freaking great deal. How much data do you get?

2GB of data, unlimited talk and text. $15/1 GB over! Supposed to end 9/30.

And you're allowed to carry a contract on that plan? I'm switching right this second if you can.

Is it a time sensitive deal once I'm on it like T-Mobile only offering extra data till the end of 2015? Once I'm on it I can keep it?

Yes, initially when I signed up I got a galaxy S5 on two year contract but I returned it which cancelled the contract and set me up as month to month so when the iPhone 6 is released I'd be able to then sign a 2 year deal. It's only time sensitive in the sense that you have until the end of Sept to join.

Can you apply an employee discount to that plan?

Yes sir. My Plan costs me $51 after the discount (before taxes)!

I don't know who you are but you are a savior. I was about to pay upwards of $180 a month for a 2 line mobile share plan. Thanks to you I can cut that to $100. Do I get less data? Yes. But I can live with it for that price.

For me, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Assuming a 64GB iPhone 6 at $399 subsidized, I would pay $15 plus tax per month. I have a pristine unlocked AT&T 64GB 5s to sell.

If I use the Next plan, a 20 month commitment would be $42.50 or $34.42 for 24 months with only taxes due at time of purchase.

You're not seeing my point. If you do NEXT and your phone breaks 6 months in, you still owe the remainder of the balance of the device + whatever the cost is to find and buy a replacement. If you by the phone on a 2 year contract your out the subsidized cost that you paid upfront+ whatever it costs you to find a replacement. It's better to have one break on a subsidized contract than on next in the long run.

How do you keep paying if you break a phone on contract? Your contract is for the 2 years of service, not that particular device.

On a 2 yr contract, and the phone breaks:
* you have to find and pay for a replacement phone

So, how is it better to have a phone on a contract? I have priced it out. If I do a contract, I have to pay $25 more per month for service, plus the $200-$300 upgrade fee. If the phone breaks, I have to pay for another phone, plus keeppaying the $25 per month for the full two years.

If I do next, I do not pay the $25 extra for service, but I do pay the fee for the phone for 20/24 months.

That they do. They also offer a $10 discount on that plan for BYOD/EDGE but taking advantage of the 2-year contract subsidy is a much better option. This new plan (or slightly older loyalty plan) is way better than even Verizon's old-style minute-based individual plans which was a minimum of $80/line for 2GB data.

I can't believe I didn't know this before 30 minutes ago. This is the best deal out there by a mile on the 4 major networks if you only need 1 or 2 lines.

The equivalent AT&T plan is $65/month but you aren't allowed to carry a contract with it so you are forced to Next and adding $30 a month on to it.

Now I just have to figure out how best to make the switch without wasting money on an ETF that expires on the 21st.

OK, let me lay it out here like this:

2 Year Contract pricing:
Assuming iPhone price stays the same - $199 upfront. $40 monthly service charge + 2GB Data = $80/ mo.
In this case you own the phone. If it breaks you owe nothing else on the device, you have to pay full price or buy replacement from CL/ Ebay, etc.

Next 18 month pricing (applies 6GB or less of data, using 2 GB in this case as an example)- $0 down - $25 montly service charge + $27.08/ month fee for the device +$40 2GB of data = $92.08/ month.
In this case if the device breaks 6 months in, you've only paid $162.48 still owe the balance of the device (about $486) to AT&T plus whatever if costs to buy a new or used device. Also, with NEXT you are essentially leasing a phone. When you trade it in in 18 months your giving back the phone you just gave $480+ for. You start from zero and paid $480+ for what? a new phone with nothing to show for the previous 18 months payments.

The plan used to be offered only to existing Verizon subscribers for customer retention. It was until middle or late last month I think that it became available for everyone. Instead of buying a device-only Verizon iPhone 6 in-store, I'm thinking of going this route so I don't have to camp out.

$299 upfront (32GB)
$60 first month
$0 activation fee (waived)
$350 ETF
-------------------------
$710 total + taxes and fees

I'd rather have the 2 year deal personally.

As an ATT rep that is obviously getting no commission from this deal, the only time is in "up in the air either direction" deal is usually when there is a single line on ATT next with 2GB of data. If you have more than one line on the account, it almost always smarter to go with ATT next. If you want to, PM me all of the details in your current bill and I can break it down for you.

You're local to me (I'm in Sacramento as well). PM me which store you're at, and I'll drop by to talk about it. :)

If you're considering going this route, check out ConsumerCellular too.
They run on AT&T towers (my locked AT&T iPhone easily accepted the CC SIM) and pricing starts at under $15.

Placing my wife and I on their plan went from an AT&T phone bill of approx. $140. a month to $65. without losing features or services.

Next is an awful choice for anyone with less than 10GB of data, anyhow.

That said, here are the numbers for 10GB.

2-Year Contract
Upfront: $199
10GB Base: $100
Line Fee: $40
Installment: $0
Monthly Total: $140
2-Year TOTAL: $3,559

AT&T Next 18
Upfront: $0
10GB Base: $100
Line Fee: $15
Installment: $27.09
Monthly Total: $142.09
2-Year TOTAL: $3,410.16

If you lose your phone with a 2-year contract, your monthly payment will still be $140 and you'd still need to replace it. Same thing if you lose your phone on Next. You still pay $142.09 and you'd still need a replacement. Only difference there is psychology. In the case of a 2-year contract, you don't think of the extra $25 you're paying for the line fee as subsidy repayment for the phone. In the case of Next, it's very obvious that the $27.09 installment pays for the phone.

I was trying to say the 2-year contract is better for this deal. I guess I just submitted the post without doing the proper edits.

Once you fully pay for a next phone, you can keep it. Sell it, whatever you want.

I will add, a single line customer may not do so well on next. Many folks have at least a few lines and can do the 10gb shared deal.

If you're trying to compare apples to apples then you need to assume that the Next customer is going to keep his phone for the same 24-months that the contract customer is going to keep his phone.
In that case, the Next customer has fully paid for his phone and does not need to turn it in.
Your lease scenario falls apart.

No, the point of NEXT is to entice customers to upgrade sooner (same with Edge and Jump). Thats where they make their money. They are assuming that most people won't care enough about what they've paid and will be fine trading in their device for the latest and greatest. People who keep their phone for the full 24 months will be the exception, not the norm.

That might be something they want and perhaps use to entice, but that's not how it has to work. Just because people might not look into it all and blindly follow something doesn't mean that it's bad because of that, it might just be bad for those people who do that because they do it.

Yes, something like Next/Edge might not be better with various plans, while it generally can be better with various other plans. In your case, it's not, in the case of many others, it certainly can be. It all depends on the individual situation and everyone needs to figure it out for themselves basically as one answer doesn't really cover it all for everyone at all times.
