Nothing from Best Buy is good.....nothing. In the rare instance where you'd actually need to make a claim on their warranty, you'd first have to find a competent employee to deal with and those are few and far between unfortunately.

Stay away from WorstBuy. They're heading towards bankruptcy. Apple on the other hand will be around. Plus there's added value with an OEM warranty.

This is how I see them:
If you see the value of Apple's technical support get AppleCare+.
If you'd rather have loss/theft coverage get SquareTrade.

Not quite. The part you have about Apple's support is good, but SquareTrade doesn't cover loss/theft.
Squaretrade does have good coverage. They recently fixed the screen on my iPad. It was nice in a way getting my own device back as opposed to a refurbished device

I am going to get the new ipad in a few days. I definitely want a warrantee. I am getting this at best buy because its alot closer than the apple store. Is best buys two year protection plan as good as apple care plus ?

Jonly good if u use it to upgrade ur ipad after 2 years for free

Consider getting a SquareTrade warranty. Cheaper than AppleCare+ - $89 with a $50 deductable. Includes accidental damage protection and option to have it insured a 3rd year for an additional $30. 5-day guaranteed turnaround time for either replacement or check.

+1 for SquareTrade versus Best Buy's warranty. And personally, +1 SquareTrade versus Apple Care.

Reason being is that SquareTrade covers you even in cases where you screwed up. I had a brand new 4S from Verizon and dropped it in a bowl of soup (fell out of my shirt pocket as I sat down to dinner). While it still worked thanks to the bowl-of-rice-trick, it had some other problems. Apple Care wouldn't have covered my replacement as the moisture indicators would have been tripped. SquareTrade was a single phone call, they give you a claim number, you go into the Apple store and buy a new phone as a replacement and then turn your receipt over (PDF email) to SquareTrade, they take the $50 deductible and PayPal or send you reimbursement for the rest almost immediately.

Apple Care is great otherwise. Best Buy warranties are for suckers IMO.

I wouldn't say it's for suckers. My BB warranty replaced my iPhone 4 twice without a single deductible. Both times I dropped it, it was replaced quickly. While the BB warranty isn't the best for all products, it works great on mobile phones. Drop phone, get replacement. I can't argue with that.

AppleCare+ or SquareTrade would have ended up costing more.

Hmmmm, I dunno. She ranks a little higher than 1 and 2 to me. But then again, its not an Apple product. :)

Jesus christ you guys hate Best Buy. I work there and I'll explain to you what happens with their warranty:

A $499 new iPad Accidental Plan is as follows:

1YR $99 (Non-extendable)
2YR $169 (Extendable)
3YR $249 (Extendable)

iPads are too expensive to fix so they will replace it with a new one on the spot. I bought a 1 year on mine and got it replaced no problem. We do this with everyone, not just employees! Computers are different where they have to send it off before the give you a new one, so I see the frustration there. And yes I know the employees are not so nice to deal with at other stores which gives us a bad moniker.

I don't force anyone or push them because that is just horrible customer service. I want you to come back by having an enjoyable experience. If you don't want the warranty or find it valuable it's no problem. :D My job is to have fun at work while giving you the best experience possible. Best Buy is trying to change. And we closed 50 stores because those leases were up. We are opening 100 new stores in the next year.

I really hate that other employees or geek squad agents do that. I can only do my best

"We" and "Us" comments seem to paint you as a little biased towards Best Buy my friend.

And yes, I agree. Even Jesus Christ hates BB.

Currently if you buy Applecare+ for iPhone or iPad you're getting accident protection built in. So starting with the iPhone 4S, there is no reason to use Squaretrade.

FWIW, not all of us feel that way about Best Buy. Frankly, I like Best Buy, and even in those rare cases where I had a problem, Best Buy corporate helped me out.

I am a Silver Premier Rewards Zone member from the first year they rolled out the upgraded program.

Thanks for posting. :)

You are absolutely right. I apologize for the misinformation regarding SquareTrade's loss/theft policy.

Thank you for the correction. :D

I dunno... I've gotten some good open box deals from Best Buy, so I kinda like them. Some sales guys/girls are more pushy than others, especially if they think you don't know squat about technology. I work in IT so it always amuses me how some of them make assumptions about my knowledge base. At any rate, I always buy on American Express because they double the manufacturer's warranty. I know it's not as good as AppleCare+, but it's free.

Stay away from best buy. I feel bad for the customers who are tricked into buying their protection plans.

Best Buy won't be around in a few years anyway. They're already closing 50 of their stores.

Some of you people need to stop giving erroneous advice. Even if best buy goes out of business your warranty is backed by an insurance company. It varies from state to state which company. It's AEG in California I think, it's listed in the fine print of your brochure. Also for devices like the iPad they usually just give you a brand new one and ship the broken one back to apple, not repair, etc. that is only done with computers.

I worked for best buy 10 years ago and took great advantage of the best buy service plans for years afterwards. Got a new 4th gen iPod touch after claiming the battery of my first gen iPod Touch was dying. They said they could only replace it with the "same" model and tried to give me a 3rd gen 8gb (which is actually a 2nd gen) told the guy that that model wasn't the same either. Ultimately I won the disagreement and he gave me the 8gb 4th gen iPod Touch. The experience is the same as some horror stories I've heard about some Apple Store Genius Bar experiences. It all really depends on the staff of the store you go to and if they are willing to honor your claim.

Of course I haven't bought any extended warranty since the iPod Touch though either because I find reselling these days more worthwhile than spending the 100+ dollars for the "peace of mind" and then getting rid of it all for pennies on the dollar of the warranty.

Mom's desktop (Gateway) has a DVD drive that won't open. Geek squad said they have to send it out. It's been a week already, for a DVD drive. I hate proprietary parts!

As for how the repair goes, I'll let you know when it finally comes back.

I work at Best Buy and a former Future Shop employee. And I know its pretty late to reply now but that's for anyone else that looks this up. I randomly found this on google as i was doing some research about customer reviews about our store and how we can make it a better place for them and some of the replies I've seen here aren't exactly true. Our Product Replacement Plan (PRP) is definitely worth it. And it just like apple care but extended. Its covers any defects with the software. So depends on where you are you can call best buy and double check if you can go into the store and get your item replaced or Geek Squad would pick it up and send you a new one.

Honestly I people that come into the store mad because their stuff is defective but they walk out satisfied because they have their coverage. I also have a family member that bought a TV from Best Buy as well and made sure he bought the service plan- it's almost $3000 TV- and they had to get it repaired/replaced twice which would've cost them $700-$800 if they didn't have that plan.

Sorry, but having to deal with 3 different levels of managers to honor the service agreement, and having them attempt to replace the item with one that is way inferior, tells me that it's not worth it.

I understand employees wanted to defend their company, but the stories are not false, nor made up. In my experience, I was a WELL informed customer. IF not, they would have denied my claim and/or given me something that was worth 1/2 of what my product was.

That is a bad experience and I likewise have GREATLY reduced my purchases from BestBuy accordingly. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and go there if you need something immediately.
