Title is question - I connect my Iphone XR directly to my car via USB. Can I turn off
bluetooth?

If you aren't using wireless carplay (which is only available currently on a few after market head units) then Bluetooth isn't needed when using carplay.

So can you connect via USB to your car?

How does it work? Do you need the head unit?

Most Car Play units require the phone be connected via USB to the head unit. They don't work wirelessly. You would need a head unit that supports Car Play.

There are some newer head units that now support wireless Car Play which uses a mix of Bluetooth and wifi for the connection instead of USB.

Yes you can. But why do you want to turn it off? On modern iPhones it uses virtually no power

Wireless CarPlay has also been available on BMWs the last couple of model years.
