Is it a common issue? (specifically on xs Max) or not? and any tips to avoid burn in?

It's not common at all, I have a few friends with original iPhone X which is 2 and half years old now and no burn in issues. The best advice is to not play the same content/game for 4-5 hours straight and I say you will be fine.

I have the original X and then gave it to my son when the 11 Pro Max came out. Heavy user, video, gaming, no burn in issues still.

Apple did a better job at preventing Burn in with Samsung’s own screens believe it or not. Probably because Apple has warmer displays that some aren’t fond of but serve a purpose for eye strain and burn in.

So...I’d ask in return, what do you consider ‘common’? As in, Common like do I know anyone that has burn-in/image retention and/or as in there’s posted Credible articles on OLED burn image retention? You might need to clarify a little bit here.

Over think much?

You mean... on a discussion site where critical thinking is actually part of asking questions in return to provoke thought? <—[Thats a rhetorical question] We all don’t share the same thought process with logic. Perhaps you should start thinking more dynamically. 😁
