yeah, definitely buy the apple care. way back when with my pismo powerbook, i had to send it back 3 times for repairs after the 2 year mark, they eventually couldn't resolve the problem and sent me a brand new powerbook!!

also had a monitor issue that was free to be replaced for us and an imac G5 HD crash.

sounds like a lot of computer problems from one company but given the multitude of computers we've owned over the years, relatively our problems have been minimal and the ones we did have were solved for us without charge (after paying for apple care, of course).

If you are buying with student discount get the applecare at the same time as it is cheaper. I have just bought a MB and ACD. Applecare to cover them both was £47

If you have CompUSA stores near you, I hear they are selling them 50% off during their closeouts. You could always check there.

I saw them for about 25% off last week at my local CompUSA. It seemed they had the Apple stuff hidden for a couple of weeks.

I got my .mac for %15 off, but they were going fast.

Think I'll head over tonight and see what else they have remaining.

AppleCare is a waste of money. Your hardware will either malfunction or it will function well beyond the 1 year period; barring any bone headed catastrophes.

I thought long and hard about getting it for my MBP but eventually reasoning prevailed.

You've been lucky. I bought my Powerbook in April 2005 (or thereabouts). Three months ago a temperature sensor failed (apparently it isn't uncommon), causing the computer to go to sleep at random times. And a few weeks ago, the lower memory socket failed as well - leaving me with just 1GB or RAM, which isn't enough for Leopard. Repairing those two things is just too expensive (and I don't have Applecare), so I'm basically working on crippled machine (fortunately there's a workaround for the temp sensor problem).
Then again, before the Powerbook, I had a Powerbook Ti, that ran flawlessly for a little over 2 years. I sold it to a friend, who is still using it to this day, running Panther without any problems.
