Can someone tell me if this is true. Say I do not have data on my AT&T plan & currently use a regular phone (not a smartphone). But say my friend gave me an iPhone 3GS. If I place my sim card, will the data plan automatically be added?? I do not want data plan. Just use only in wifi & calls. Thanks

Yes it will. Not immediately, but eventually one will be added to you. You will receive a text message saying you need a valid data plan and to visit an AT&T store or visit att.com.

Don't heed the warning and eventually you'll be slapped with the $15/month data plan.

AT&T will first send you a text letting you know that they have detected that you are using an iPhone without a data plan and to please call them as soon as possible to add one. If you fail to do so, they will send you another text a few days later letting you know that unless you call them, they will automatically add a data plan to your account.
