How much water do you drink per day?

I drink about 2 liters of water a day but I also drink quite a bit of milk so I am well hydrated :D

Possibly the best episode they did...you'll notive that my avatar is Edmund as Cardinal Chunder. ;)

Lord Blackadder can hold his beer rather well as a matter of fact, though he had a rather unpleasant run-in with some incredibly strong ale (a.k.a cheap tequila) a couple weeks back.

my trainer says we should drink 1 glass of water as soon as we get up b/c you lose some water during sleep. helps get the system going.

cheers,
keebler

I wish someone told me that long time ago. It does makes a big difference after I started drinking a glass of water when I get up. Before, I'd be all grouchy and lethargic in the morning without the water.

I'd also advise a glass of water after you get to work, during lunch, mid-day, afternoon, dinner, after dinner, and before going to bed. Is that 8 glasses of water yet?

And for every latte, cappucino, mochiatto, Coke, Sprite, carbonated drink, drink from Starbucks, beer, wine, and everywhich form of alcohol that you drink, you'd probably want to make it up with an two glasses of water.

I can officially announce that this thread has caused me to drink one extra glass of water so far today...though I need to get off the 'net and get some work done between posts and water-induced trips to the toilet.

:) You're either a very devoted fan, or just good at using search engines...

Both, but that's an unforgettable scene!

Great series. btw. Ever watched the office? (over a glass of water, to stay in this thead....)

Only once or twice...I'll probably get the DVD set one of these days, though the Flying Circus has priority.

Summers are hot where I live so 3 litres a day in the summer isn't uncommon. In the winter with all the rain falling and a less active life, probably about 1.5 litres. The hardest times are when it starts to get hot and then again when it cools down in autumn. It takes awhile to adjust to the change in season and I'm either dehydrated or peeing constantly.

Moderation in water consumption is essential. If you're going to be very active on a particular day, be sure to drink lots of water hours before you start. I cycle a lot and there's nothing worse than starting a bike ride already dehydrated. The body simply can't keep up.

I've heard this formula from a number of sources

Take your weight in pounds and divide by two to get the number of ounces of water you should drink each day.

225/2=112.5 ounces

I drink at least that since I drink at around two liters during/after the gym in the morning and then three or four more liters during the day at work. I don't waste money with bottled water since we have good filters on our taps. It's worked for me.

Not surprisingly, there are a lot of oft-repeated myths in this thread. Except in the case of illness or extra physical activity, there is no need to drink that much water.

Everyone should read this article by a Dartmouth Medical School "kidney specialist and author of two widely used textbooks on the kidney and water balance". He has extensively researched the subject, and even traced the "8 glasses" myth to the probable source: a misunderstood statement from the National Research Council that discussed total water intake, most of which comes from food rather than drinking water. He also debunks these myths: "by the time you're thirsty, it's too late" and "urine must be clear".

He points out a number of health disadvantages to high water intake, not to mention the cost (if you're buying bottled water).

Thank you. And the answer of course, is No for all the reasons contained within that article, unless you do a lot physical activity and/or live in a very hot climate...

Let's see: Professor Emeritus of Physiology and kidney specialist vs. bottled water suppliers and 'nutritionists'. Hmmm.

1) I've heard 8 cups...but I think it doesn't have to be just straight water, and certainly not bottled water (which is a scam). Milk and juice are probably upwards of 90% water...so you aren't limited to just water.

2) I think the main point is to drink fluids that hydrate you (milk, juice, water, gatorade) and not drinks that dehydrate you (coffee, soda).

Just be careful with the amount of Gatorade and Powerade you drink. That a LOT of sugars and sodium, and unless you workout a LOT, it's just as bad as a soft drink. My suggestion, if you're to drink that, split it between two 32 oz bottles and then fill the rest with water, or just drink Pedialyte (this was recommended to me by a gym I belong to, where one of the trainers is also a nutritionist). Contains the same electrolytes and hydration, just lower sugar and sodium levels bc it's made for little bodies.

Buy a water filter and a reusable watter bottle and bottle your own water. It's easy. It's cheap and you don't contribute to our plastic waste problem. Then you don't have to worry if there's some conspiracy going on with the bottled water industry.

Wow, another old thread!

I take medication that makes my mouth dry, so I pretty much always have a glass of water at hand.

In any case, while I'm at work I'll usually drink 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning and then by noon switch over to water. My water comes straight out of the water fountain and goes into a 12 fl. oz. cup. Over the course of the afternoon, I'll usually put down 4-5 12 oz. cups. I continue sipping water all evening, and will usually get in a couple more cups. There again, going back to my dry mouth, I usually go to bed with a cup of water on the nightstand.

That's about the extent of my fluid intake aside from my Friday afternoon Dr. Pepper :) . I might also have sweet tea with my meal if I go out to eat, although it depends on whether or not it sounds good and if the restaurant serves good tea(otherwise I drink water).

Oh, there's also the occasionally classic Southern on-the-go snack/lunch of a bag of peanuts in an RC/Coke/Dr. Pepper(RC is the preferred beverage hear) and of course a nice double decker chocolate Moon Pie to top it off. That's an occasional treat.

I don't drink nearly enough. Really don't get as thirsty as I'm apparently supposed to.

What an interesting idea... I'll have to try that.

It has a long tradition in the South. For all I know, it may be an acquired taste that someone who's never had it before would find disgusting.

Still, like I said it's a time-tested on the go light lunch or snack around here. Stop in a gas station, get a bottle of any of the above beverages(glass is best, but don't fret over plastic), a single serve sleeve of Planters or whatever preferred/available brand is(get salted for the classic experience, although I like honey roasted). Take a swig of the drink, eat a handful of peanuts, and then dump the rest of the peanuts in the bottle. Enjoy!

As I said, for the real experience top it off with a moon pie :)

Well, that’s interesting. Does it have a name? I’ll pass though. Definitely not my sort of thing.

"Peanuts in a Coke(RC/Dr. Pepper)"

It's also worth mentioning that-not so much in Kentucky-but at other places in the Deep South "Coke" is a catch-all name for any carbonated soft drink. I've been in a restaurant before, ordered a Coke, and been asked "What kind?" If you want a Coke, you need to specify a "Co-Cola."

Sometimes we get really creative with names around here :)

Heh, yeah I’ve noticed the “Coke” thing while traveling around GA and AL. Perhaps that convention grew out of Coca-cola’s origins down there in GA?

Old School right there

I'd rather eat boiled peanuts...

Water wise, I drink when I'm thirsty or think I'm hungry but not sure. I've never followed the 8 glasses a day advice because it's fairly inaccurate. Some people may require twice that amount or less. Though, water is arguably better than almost anything else.
