    Hi,

I am planning to buy an iPad for my mom. She is not a computer literate and doesn't even have an email address. So my question is to setup the iPad do we need to have an email address (i.e., yahoo, gmail etc.) handy or can we create an iCloud email address as part of setting up the iPad for my mom.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

You should not need an email address for setting up the iPad. You will want to set up an Apple ID to be able to to download apps. You would only need an email address if you are planning on using the Mail App, Facetime or Messages.

Other members here will let you know if I missed anything. Email address can be added anytime later on.

Thanks for the response. My plan is i want to setup an icloud email address for her without creating/using another email address (i.e., yahoo, gmail etc.,). Is it possible. All online materials suggest that i need to have an email address handy to setup apple id or icloud account.

OOPS! My apologies. Got carried away and forgot about needing an email address to set up an Apple ID. You need the email address so Apple can notify you when your Apple ID has been accessed for a downloaded app or setting up your new Apple ID. All part of the security. It allows you to keep a close eye on your account.

Can't you just set up an email address for her and be done with it?

No you do not need an email account. I've set up over 1000 iPads without using a previously created email account. Apple will create a free youname@icloud.com account for you. Just click yes.

Create new iCloud account when you start and you'll be good to go.

Apple does ask for a verification email incase the user forgets and locks their iPad account, but it's not required AND you could just put your email account in. That way you could help out mom if you get a notification.

I can, but i want to keep it simple by having a single email address to worry about rather than two (iCloud and other email) for syncing contacts etc.,

    Great. Thanks for the info.
